Mark Campbell interviewed at Washington, Montana, Vandy and maybe some others. Very surprising to see him come up empty.

I'd be inclined to believe he's going to be a very discriminating candidate; in his experience, he not only learned the X 'n O basics, but has also undoubtedly learned the importance of finding that a "Good Match" makes for a successful future...so be picky!

There's an interesting phenomenon in coaching girls and women.

A significant percentage of female coaches are at the Division I level. Division II, Division III and NAIA have many more male coaches, percentage-wise.

At the club and high school level, the preponderance of male coaches is also hard to miss.

It's natural that coaches of any gender would follow the money (and facilities and prestige), so given the choice between D-III and D-I, obviously D-I is the better one.

What this disparity does point to, however, is the smaller pool of female coaches on the women's side. A lot of this, of course, has to do with who takes care of the children in a family, since coaching is a very time-consuming activity at any level.

But I think another part is that women are less willing/more intelligent about the time demands of coaching and the financial rewards. Men, as my wife points out, are much more likely to get obsessed with some activity (a hobby, whatever) than women, who it seems to me generally take a much more balanced and healthy attitude to how to live the good life. (I know every high school program I have been associated with or know about struggles to find females to take positions on the staff -- even as assistants who don't necessarily have to be there all the time. Right now, I would love to have a female assist me on a JV team, but candidates are very, very hard to find.)

Whatever the reason, though, one can understand the male coaches' frustration about the D-1 jobs, as the overall pool of experienced coaches at lower levels contains more more men -- yet women get more of the D-1 jobs.

I'm not saying this is unfair, nor that women have an easier road, or that women aren't capable of being superb coaches. I will say, though, that it would be great if more women were coaching at all levels.

You can directly trace the decline at Purdue to Kristy Curry having children. She and her husband, Kelly her top assistant, both stepped back their involvement in game planning and recruiting and pushed more of those duties onto their assistants, who frankly were not up to the task. A large part of the Curry's early success at Purdue was due to Kelly's game planning, but that took hours and hours of his time each week that was now to be spent with his family. Not making a judgement call on the rightness of it, but the results started to slide without him putting in those long hours every night and the on court performances started looking more ragged and less prepared for their last 4 years at Purdue.

I saw that about a big and wing.

It would certainly be rude for Ralph to poach a UConn starter on her way out the door, presumably with a rave review recommendation to Vanderbilt from Geno. So, I doubt that Ralph would leave with ONO or Edwards.

I could see something like that happening with Piath Gabriel, who is unlikely ever to get serious game-time developmental minutes at NC contender UConn, and who Geno might be willing to send along with Ralph to help her out with some initial players (assuming Gabriel likes the idea).

A wing -- who's a disgruntled wing? McLean is probably frustrated but can hardly be called a wing at this point with no outside shot. Poffenbarger? Chassion?

Or the whole thing is just a wild rumor, for which I should continue my lifelong antipathy for Twitter.

That is not necessarily poaching. Sometimes a player is just closer to an assistant than to the HC. It happens. Or it could be someone who's not happy about the advent of Ms. Juhasz.

It happens. See Aari Macdonald and Shakira Austin

If you want to hire a someone with no head coaching experience, it's hard to imagine a better candidate. I assumed she was the coach-in-waiting at UConn, but maybe this is a way to get some HC experience before coming back?

There's not a great track record for UConn assistants as head coaches, but if I was a betting man, I would bet on Ralph.

I am very interested in evaluating three coaching hires in 4-5 years against each other:

Moseley to Wisconsin
Ralph to Vandy
Gearlds to Purdue.....

All three take over very bad teams/programs so its a pretty even starting point. And the way I typed them is the way I see them ranking. I am NOT a fan at all of taking a coach from NAIA where most of the coaches she was up against are part timers and jumping her up many levels to throw into the Big Ten with her only D1 coaching experience will be one year under her former HC who has failed miserably the last 15 years. The only good thing about hiring Gearlds I can say is its not Stephanie White.

This is a good hire by McNeese which has suffered five losing seasons in a row.

Kennedy is a program builder and will have his work cut out for him as McNeese and Lake Charles is not only dealing with the pandemic, as is everyone else, but is recovering from TWO devastating hurricanes.

Other than that, Lake Charles may be a little better of a place for Kennedy and his family to reside. Good people and good food! McNeese also has a former athlete (football) as its president and a former basketball coach as its athletic director. This is a good recruiting area along the I-10 corridor from Houston to Florida.

Winning in the Southland Conference may not be that difficult as perennial power SFA, along with Abilene Christian and UCA (Central Arkansas), leave the SLC for greener pastures this coming season.

Campbell was reportedly rejected from UW because of gender and lost Vandy to Shea (which I would agree with) but Montana? And he lost it to an assistant coach from OSU, albeit one with Montana ties. Did he interview at Oklahoma?

Because of his West Coast ties, he would ostensibly do best there but what would be open? USC?

If I recall correctly Aari McDonald had no intentions of transferring when the coaching change happened at Washington, I believe she worked out with the new coaching staff and decided it wasn’t a good fit. She went to a school that is closer to home than Washington, but also with 2 coaches she was familiar with. Also did Aari get recruited to Arkansas, I don’t recall the roster their, but that also comes into play would she have fit a need there.

Nothing on the site yet, but St. John's tweeted out a welcome to Candice Walker joining the staff: https://twitter.com/StJohnsWBB/status/1382708425247842307

I'm assuming this is the former Loyola assistant from the available coaches list on page 1 of the thread.

This is flipping huge from a player development standpoint.

Indeed. I always think of Mr. Starkey as one of the most unhearalded-but-significant assistants in the game.

Wonder who will replace those two. And does anybody know what Jon Harper's reputation is as a coach? He's always been on Kellie's staff, got his first asst. coach gig with Wes Moore but I don't hear much about him.

He's pretty anonymous. Supposed to be the post coach. KK improved considerably after 2 years with him, Tamari Key not so much.

Key was only in her second year in college. I think she’s right about on schedule. She’ll continue to improve if she works hard. I’m more concerned with who replaces Lacey Goldwire, who I think was in charge of much of the recruiting.
