Nepotism isn't a "sudden problem" in basketball or the world, and anti-nepotism laws and rules are now almost universal. In the West, anti-nepotism rules began to be formulated in the Middle Ages in the Catholic Church, because popes and bishops would frequently appoint their nephews (nepos, in Latin) to important positions.
Today, anti-nepotism laws and rules are universal in the federal government, the military, probably every state government, and most large corporations. The reasons are obvious: to minimize actual or perceived favoritism, unfairness, bias, discrimination, bad morale, employee jealousy, and incompetence. Many philosophers, sociologists, human resources professionals, and just common folk believe nepotism to be an unethical practice.
Even the President of the United States had difficulty hiring his son-in-law under the federal anti-nepotism statute passed in 1967 because of Jack Kennedy's appointment of Bobby Kennedy as Attorney General and Sargent Shriver as Director of the Peace Corps. And even when small employers don't have an anti-nepotism policy, a job seeker with common sense named Summer should be very, very chary of joining a firm named Winter, Winter & Winter.
Just because we can name five or six examples of coaching nepotism among the 351 D1 schools doesn't make the practice common, desirable or lessen all the many historical reasons for prohibiting it. All it means is that some schools are so greedy or desirous of getting a particular coach that they are willing to look the other way or resort to legal gimmicks to evade applicable anti-nepotism rules. |

I had been observing Kellie Harper's coaching career from Auburn to WCU to NC State to Missouri State and now to UT. My guts indicates that hiring her husband may be her Achilles heel to reach the next level. I don't think it is good idea. It may end up like what happened to Stephanie Gaitley at St. Joseph (PA). |
There's never been a problem with Kellie and Jon Harper, so naff off, ridor.
And here ya go. I copied this from another post. There should be enough to keep you busy and out of trouble. Go research THEM for awhile.
And JR Payne, And Jenn Rizzotti, and Kim McNeil, and Kristie Curry, and Brooke Stoehr, and... should we keep going? |
Gonzaga head coach Lisa Fortier and her husband Craig is her assistant
Washington head coach Jody Wynn and her husband Derek is her assistant
Portland St has an husband and wife tandem as assistant coaches.
Hartford head coach Kim McNeill and her husband Cory is the associate head
coach.
Atlanta Dream head coach Nicki Collen was her husband Tom's assistant coach for years in the college ranks.
It seems like it has being going on for years.

Do you REALLY want to make a BFD about this, derail the thread, and sue the schools and the NCAA over it? Otherwise, kindly either move the discussion to the Kellie Harper thread, start an entirely new thread, or please drop it.

Alysiah Bond takes position as AC at Texas Tech. Leaving Michigan State with 2 openings for AC.
She replaces Larry Tidwell.
There was a link to story (removed it since link was broken) and has since been removed. She was on roster page though.

Good for MSU! I was wondering if Joanne P. McCallie would try to hire Haynie at Duke to replace Rene Haynes (both played for McCallie on the 2005 Final Four team). But Coach P is heading in a different direction.
With Dean Lockwood and Kristin Haynie, those are two good hires for Suzy Merchant.

Agree. Despite the loss of Cooks, think Michigan State can still compete at a high level in the Big Ten.
Suzy sounds like a great boss. She hasn't had that much staff turnover and has groomed up-and-comers like Amaka Agugua for opportunities outside of East Lansing.
