CMU at Vandy tied at halftime.
Vandy has only 6 players plus a walk on from the soccer team. |
In the Dec. 6 game against Ball State, Vandy had 6 players. Freshman starter, Alexander was injured after 5 minutes of play, so Vandy had 5 players for the remaining 35 minutes of the game. Two players had 4 fouls. Vandy won 60-43.
In this Dec 15 game against Central Michigan, those same 5 "starters" played with 2 subs available. Neither sub had played previously this year. The walk-on soccer player played 1 minute. Bree Horrocks, a red-shirt Senior, was diagnosed with blood-clots prior to the beginning of this season. At least one Vandy fan had reported that she had decided to end her basketball career. I don't know if that is true because their website had shown picture of her on the bench in warm-ups. If true, I guess she changed her mind when 4 or 5 teammates were injured. Horrocks played 15 minutes in this game which they lost 66-57. LeaLea Carter fowled out with 2 minutes to play.

Vandy may only have 5 players for their next game on Thursday vs. Miami. Walk-on soccer player Jackie Welch would not only play, but start and be required to play 40 minutes.

she better add a couple more walk-ons so they at least have bodies in unis. I'm sure there are some girls who played in HS. Maybe someone from the volleyball team? Another soccer player? A track star?

This is all a bit bizarre, no? Anybody know anything about their predicament, or is it just a pile-up of injuries?

Due to transfers(losing 4 players), Vanderbilt started with only 9 players this season. Bree Horrocks(originally out for the season) was activated for their game on Tuesday. Jackie Welch, their walk-on soccer player, dressed for her first game on Tuesday as well and played. Currently out with injuries are Chelsie Hall, Jordyn Cambridge(ACL), Brinae Alexander(right knee), Isabella Paldrmic(ACL), Autumn Newby(right leg). That'll gave them 6 if Horrocks is able to play on Thursday.

Hawaii 39 UNLV 21 Halftime
UNLV has looked awful. Hawaii has played a zone that has completely confounded the Rebels. I saw UNLV VS USC and they looked decent, but today they are just bad. Hopefully the other games today will be better (Washington St vs Kansas and Northwestern vs Wichita St)

UNLV came back in the second half and took the lead but Hawaii hit a bucket with 2 seconds left to send the game to OT. Hawaii hit the key shots and won 66-61.
UNLV has far better talent but they also have Kathy Olivier.

End of the first Q and Notre Dame leads Western Kentucky 23-8. Turner has three blocks in the first Q.

Kansas beat Washington St by 8 in a game that was not nearly that close. The Cougars were bad throughout, and particularly challenged when Hirstova picked up 2 quick fouls. Kansas didn't impress me much either. I can't see them even competing for the top half of the Big 12.
Game 3 features Northwestern vs Wichita St. I suspect NW will win comfortably.

Northwestern 22 Wichita St 4 - 2minutes to go in the first.
NW scored the first 20 points. I may not make it to the end of this one.

Northwestern 42-10 3:00 to go in the half.
I don't think I'll leave at halftime, but I know I won't be around for the finish

Northwestern 48 Wichita St 15 halftime
I hate leaving early but I will see both teams tomorrow (Wichita St vs Washington St and Northwestern vs Kansas) so I am gone. I hope it doesn't become an expensive decision.

Day 2 in Las Vegas opens with Utah vs. Florida. My focus is on Utah freshman and local product Dre'una Edwards. 3 minutes into the second quarter, Utah leads 30-24.

Just checked the scores and saw that 1-7 Grambling beat 10-0 Indiana. How does that happen?

Utah 44 Florida 33 half
Edwards has looked pretty good but was clearly keyed up in her return home.

Oregon stomps on Air Force as predicted. Without Graves on the bench as he's serving his two game suspension. Ionescu gets her record setting triple double. And just looking at the box, one can see why none of their bench guards gets time on the floor in any game that matters.

parity?
and then Butler beats OhSU! handily 66-53
Perhaps some teams went on vacation a bit early. |
Having just watched Florida (who led OSU in the fourth quarter), the loss to Butler doesn't surprise me. As for Grambling, Shakyla Hill was the leading scorer. Indiana actually took the lead briefly with 90 seconds to go after having trailed by 17, but the Tigers scored the last 4 points for the upset.
