Lol, Krystal Thomas in the first round. The kid will be lucky if she's even called in the third. A little shocked people don't have Chastity Reed going in the 2nd round. |
I agree regarding Reed. The couple of times I've seen her, she looked pretty good even with the injuries (two sprained ankles and a stress fracture). I can imagine what she'd be like if she were healthy.

Coco started at point for them in the playoffs so she can play the 1. Kelly is naturally a 1, and Shalee can play nothing else but the point guard position. That's 3 players who play point for the Dream. While any of those players could be released, I just don't see why the Dream take a point guard when they have decent point guards while they have holes in the post. As said, Bales and Leuchanka are unsigned. Could easily see Breland being drafted to Dream.

My reasoning:
I don't see them passing up Vandersloot unless they think she can't be better than what they have. It's always a question.
I love Dunlap but don't think she's a sure thing by any stretch of the imagination - in fact most scouts think she will have to transition to the SF to play in the W. I love Breland but she's also got lots of question marks, and IMO will also probably be playing more as a SF than a PF....so if the Dream really want a POST, I think they would be 'reaching' at that point in the draft.
Their starting posts are one of the best pairs (if not the best) in the W. Their point guard by committee is one of the worst (if not the worst) in the W. Good PG's don't come along in every draft. I can't say that Vandersloot is a for-sure thing, but she looks pretty darn good at that point in this draft. If by chance Lavender or Pederson are still on the board, then yes, I could see them taking a post...but the chances of either of them dropping that far is pretty remote.
Also, I would be surprised if they didn't sign at least one of Bales or Leuchanka back. And they could get a far better 4th post out there in FA land than they can get a real PG.

Bales and Leuchanka are reserved. If they don't come back to Atlanta they can't go elsewhere. Leuchanka might stay home, but Bales should be back.

I know you like to think that scrawny tall players can play PF in the W but it's not really that easy to do. Offense ok, but defense, no. In college they can post up smaller players. That won't happen in the W and they will get pushed out of the way by the meatier PF in the W. They can't all play for Phoenix, or maybe Tulsa, where tall and scrawny works, a la Bonner.
Breland's main problem in the moment is that she can't keep running up and down the floor without gasping for breath. It's not clear how long the scar tissue will continue to be a problem or if it will ever not be a problem...but it's definitely a problem, and a conundrum - where she excels is on a running team, but she can't really run for long. She will hopefully go to a team where she can play no more than 2 minutes in a quarter. Any team taking her has to understand that even if your starter is injured, she can't (at this time) play starter minutes.

Agreed. But if she can't play the 4 in the league, then she won't be in the league. She won't be playing the 3

Watching some of the Big East tournament on ESPN2, does anyone think Deveraux Peters for Notre Dame can sneak into the top two rounds of this draft? I know she had that knee injury, but she's got some athleticism, potential, and I have to think she's at least as good a prospect as some listed in that mock draft.

She's listed as a senior, but reportedly she is coming back for another year at ND next year.

I'm waiting for Tulsa to make moves, at least with re-signing their free agents. With Cambage and Black at the 5 spot, does Tulsa need to re-sign Ohlde? Where else would you see her fitting in?
Tulsa has quite a few free agents.

Latta has tweeted that she'll be back in Tulsa.

Not sure why MN would take a shooting guard in the 2nd round. Seems to me they might look at a PG prospect or hedge their bets with another post option rather than bringing in an SG. That is unless said SG is a 3-point specialist of the highest order, and if that were so she would likely be gone in round 1, lol. |
Does it make a difference who the Lynx select in the 2nd rd of the 2011 WNBA Draft, the Lynx will have a hard enough time squeezing in their two 1st round picks on a 11 player roster. |
Well, yeah, I think it does. Injuries happen. If the Lynx don't trade those two picks then they should use them to get more depth at thin positions. They brought back Adair at the end of last season. Sometimes a rookie who went through your training camp is called back.

The top picks of the second round sometimes are good picks in the draft. If these rookies can not make the final cut at Minny their might be another team that will scoop them up from waivers. If Minny wants to get some value from their top two second round picks their best bet is to trade them.

So ok...having seen Chastity Reed today, frankly I was not all that impressed. She has an ok midrange game, but apparently can't shoot the three. She was quick enough at this level to get off her shot, but I doubt she will be able to do it consistently in the W. She's scrappy on defense but hard to tell how that will translate.
In general, watching these finals in the 'other' leagues is a bit like watching the minor leagues. Some good play, but basically slower, not as crisp offensively and it looks like the players haven't spent much time in the weight room.
Bottom line: late 2nd round at best and I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes 3rd round.
To tell the truth, I was more impressed with Arnika Brown, kind of a minor league version of Victoria Dunlap. She will also get a look somewhere down there toward the bottom of the 2nd round or into the 3rd. Don't know if she is 6'2" as listed or not but very tenacious on the boards... and athletic.

You'll have to explain why you're high on Vandersloot if this is a major consideration.

The quick answere is mostly because we've already seen her perform against some of the best teams...and perform well. When they lost all their starters last year, I couldn't imagine that Gonzaga would have as good a year as they have had. Part of it clearly is recruiting and coaching, but you gotta say that Vandersloot has been at the center of it, even if she is at the point....That said, I think she will definitely have some things to work on to perform well in the W. There will be a learning curve. She also definitely needs time in the weight room.
I'm actually not sure I would quite say I am 'high' on her. If I were, then I would be saying SASS should take her over DRob. But logically it seems to me that she is a good pick for Atlanta at that point in the draft. Part of it is based on her talent, part of it on Atlanta's needs, and part of it based on who else will be available at that point in time. She could be a total flameout, but she could also develop into something special. It's always a chance you take after the first few picks.

Myrtle, thank you for announcing that Chasity Reed was playing this afternoon. I rushed to the tv to watch her. Your assessment of her is accurate. She is so thin she makes DeWanna Bonner look fat! Her mid range shot is good and she shoots with good form. I do question her strength and quickness. She was quick enough to get her shot off in this league but can she do that in the W? Hmmnn? I believe she will be drafted in the third round or she will not get drafted but will get invited to some teams training camp.
