Next year's draft will be crazy. You will have your choice between perhaps the next Lisa Leslie (Fowles) or the next Tina Thompson (Parker). Of course, this doesn't include all of the other prizes that will be available in the first two rounds.

I'm SO glad she's a junior so Purdue can have her for another year!
I see Peppie's point.
When I think of versatile players to build a franchise around, I think Tamika Catchings, and Chamique Holdsclaw (coincidentally, both from Tennessee). To pass up Candace Parker would be like passing on a player like Catch or Claw.
When I think of dominant posts I think, Lisa Leslie, and Yolanda griffith. To pass on Sylvia Fowles would be like passing on a player like Yo or LLL.
So does your team need a versatile player to build a franchise around or a dominant post (which is very hard to find)?
LLL and Yo have won WNBA Championships - Catch and Claw have not.
For example, if they both came out this season, I think the Mercury would be better off with Fowles. They have their "franchise player" in The Diana. What they need is their "Lisa Leslie/Yolanda Griffith"
But definitely trade down to get the most out of having the #1pick.
Of course if Candace bulks up a little and plays two more years at Tennesse she can add "dominant post" to her resume...

any team with a lottery pick gets a guaranteed star on their team. Next year's draft is very deep (and the 2009 draft).

Golly, the Shock are going to have a tough choice with the #1 pick next year.

The pf vs. dominant 5 is a good way to look at this. Someone compared Catchings and Holdsclaw as opposed to LL and Griffith. But let's look at a true pf...Scotty Pippen. Underreated playing in Michael's shadow. In his prime he was truly a great versatile player. As opposed to a dominant player like Shaq.
I'm with the majority here. If Parker comes out in '08 she'll go #1. And that's even if Folwes has a better season next year. But if both were coming out this season, and if I was Phoenix, I'd be hard pressed to pass on Folwes.
Parker could fit in nicely with the run and gun offense. But with DT-CP-PT you got a lot of scoring. You need your dominant post now. Your stopper. And also a post that will get you a few points. Even though it would be extremely hard to pass on Candace Parker, I'd be snatchin' up Folwes with the quickness.

Parker can play the five as well as the four, maybe better.

I got the feeling in the WNBA Candace will be a 4. And that of course could depend on where she ends up. We'll have to see about the 5. She'll have to toughen up to play a constant 5 in the W. She's too much of a finess player imo.

Wouldn't it be cool of Atlanta got a franchise in '08 and they selected Parker? That would mean Candace and Sheldon would play for the same city.

I cant think of too many. Fowles is a bomb.

Yes. I think if the league wants to keep expanding, they need to automatically bump expansion teams to the top of the lottery for at least one, maybe two years. Make sure those teams become competitive quickly.

Not going to happen. That would piss off the existing teams. I think the highest pick an expansion team would have in the 2008 draft is #6. That's probably somebody like Tasha Humphrey so it's not exactly scrub territory.
There was a pseudo rumour circulating about Fowles declaring for the 2007 draft, but I put that in the Candace Parker basket. Hopefully I am proven wrong... |

I agree to a certain extent. I think there should be a new rule, but not just because of next years possible draft. Sure, there tons of talented players next year, so most teams will get a star. But that won't happen every year, and sometimes expansion might happen on a less talented draft year.
Here's two ideas:
(A) Put expansion teams in the lottery.
or
(B) Let the lottery winner take the #1 pick(for novelty purposes) and let the expansion teams take the next available picks.
For example, if the WNBA expanded to Atlanta and Denver, but New York won the lottery, the picks would go
1. New York
2. Atlanta
3. Denver
Ect.

How many balls do they get? Are they locked into a "no worse than X" position like the worst teams are now?

That could work. I was thinking of giving them the number of balls the worst team has.

Fowles looks more coordinated than Leslie and all other players her height, but doesn't have Leslie's super long arms or offensive skills. I think she'll be a star in the WNBA. Next Leslie? Maybe.
