Sky's WNBA draft pick centers on one position

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/basketball/ct-sky-draft-preview-spt-0414-20160413-story.html

Quote:
Unless there's a run on post players in Thursday's WNBA draft — which is certainly possible given size comes at a premium in this league — the Sky plan to spend the 10th overall pick on a center "that can help us with our interior defense," according to coach/general manager Pokey Chatman.

"I'm not saying that's the only area we lack but that would be a good place to start (for) now and in the near future," she said.

Quote:
Opponents often exploited the weakness, daring the Sky to challenge their top post players. For example, the Sky twice gave up a season-high 52 points in the paint against the Dream.

Quote:
"You got to think about backup true fives and her protection when she's out on the court, and allowing Cheyenne to grow," Chatman said.

Four players may be on the Sky's wish list, the question is who will drop to 10?

They go on to list: Boyette, Jones, Bulgak, Hamblin.

Seems pretty straightforward.

Forget all of this #3, #4 business. If I am Agler, I tell the Sun they can have the No. 2 for Kelsey Bone, straight up. Let's see how much they really want Jefferson.

Why not if they can package Bentley and a pick for a big?

Why would Agler care if he's the coach of the Sparks Wink

I did not want to start a new thread for this, but it looks like WatchESPN has an ESPN3 feed listed for the podium cam this year. Hopefully that means us junkies get reasonable looks at the late picks being made while the commentators spend all of the TV focused on the first round picks.

Shades wrote:
If you look at Spooner's last third round mock, there's some conceivably decent potential there. So do we really need to go as far as looking at NAIA or D2 players?

There's bound to be foreign players showing up mostly in the second and third rounds as deferred picks, but to try to guess at them would be pretty insane. Could use the help of the international fans on who might be this year's Meesseman.

I don't think there are any Meessemans in this draft either in terms of readiness to contribute or likeliness to always show up. Heck, there could be more invalid international picks than real picks.

On accomplishment alone among the 1996s, Aleksandra Crvendakic will likely get picked. There seems to be general awareness of Cecilia Zandalasini, so she may get picked. Nogaye Lo of Spain seems to have hit a bit of a wall developmentally, but she could be an insightful pick as for someone as a post who improves down the line and is good in a few years. There are some intriguing Russians with Zhosselina Maiga kind of popping up recently and Daria Kolovskaya maybe developing into a shooting specialist at some point. I would not rule out picks from more obscure countries like a Julie Allemand from Belgium. A pick of a Hungarian player would not be a huge surprise as they have put a lot of effort into youth development in recent years.

Second chances at the 1995s do not seem to yield much either. Someone might pick Aby Gaye of France in the hopes that she will become a great defensive center in a few years. You never know when those WNBA people will pull an Astan Dabo out of a hat, but hopefully nobody burns too high of a pick.

I feel like there needs to be an Australian picked, but the options are not really there. Lauren Scherf is probably the most accomplished since she's been around a while, but probably won't get drafted.

That's not the only one that's bad of the 4. One of them has us taking Hamblin while passing on Jones. Another has us taking Bulgak, while passing on Weisner. I do agree that Hamblin probably isn't the player we need, but would take her if she is the BPA. Anyway - I think she ends up with the Sky.

I don't really get why people think we'll take Hamblin. We're the fastest paced team in the league and we traded a lottery pick for a center who's better than her.

Might be time to find a formula that works Wink

Is Cooper kicking himself for trading #4?

Lynx likely won't have a chance to draft Rachel Banham

http://m.startribune.com/lynx-likely-won-t-have-a-chance-to-draft-rachel-banham/375625031/

Quote:
Banham also wants to be drafted as high as possible, and it appears the top scorer in Gophers history will get that wish. UConn’s Breanna Stewart and Moriah Jefferson are the consensus No. 1 and No. 2 picks, while mock drafts have Banham going anywhere from No. 4 (to Connecticut) to No. 7 (to Washington). The Lynx pick first at No. 14.

Quote:
“I’d love to go in the first round,” said Banham, one of 12 players invited to attend the draft at Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Casino. “Regardless of where I go, it’s a blessing.

“I’ve been working out, getting mentally ready to go to the next level. I’m super excited; it’s going to be great, and I’m definitely ready. It’s just crazy how fast it’s happened. It feels like the season just ended yesterday, and I’m already off to the next level.”

WNBA draft 2016 prospect profile: Oregon State's Jamie Weisner

http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2016/04/wnba_draft_2016_prospect_profi_1.html

Quote:
Room to grow: Weisner can still improve defensively, and she won't be the tallest or most athletic perimeter player on a professional roster.

Quotable: "Jamie has become a complete player before our eyes. She was someone that really struggled defensively just two years ago. I mean, I wouldn't have her on the floor in a stretch of games, to be honest, defensively. Nothing to do with her offense. So to see her game become complete has been remarkable." -- Oregon State coach Scott Rueck

Draft projection: Late first round/second round

Possible fits: Connecticut Sun (pick third, fourth, 15th, 23rd, 27th), Dallas Wings (pick fifth, 18th, 30th), New York Liberty (pick 12th, 24th, 36th), Los Angeles Sparks (pick sixth, 17th, 29th), Washington Mystics (pick seventh, 19th, 31st)

Well, according to Thibault no traditional centers or point guards will be taken at 7. Or maybe even at all. Laughing

Quote:
The Mystics, however, are down two experienced guards from last year in Kara Lawson and Armintie Herrington. Lawson has elected to miss at least the first part of the season while working as an analyst for ESPN, and Herrington announced her retirement in September following a nine-year career.

“Whoever we draft doesn’t have to come in and be a savior,” Thibault said. “That’s nice if it is, but we can afford to be a little bit patient. For us, I think we have a specific need, but if I don’t love the options, then we may just take the best player.”

They made it sound like Banham is first on the list. At least that guarantees to keep her away from PHX. Hard to see her slipping past the Sparks though. #MambaTown

OK final mock draft

It is always hard to do a mock because you're torn between what you would do, what you would like to see happen, what you think teams will do, and trying to predict the crazy stuff that always seems to happen. So this mock is an attempt to be a hybrid of all of those concepts, with a little commentary thrown in.

1. Sea Stewart
2. SA Jefferson still see this pick possibly being trade, Conn and Atl would be the most likely partners IMO
3. Conn Tuck If Conn wants her, which I'm sure they do, why would you pick her 4th
4. Conn Banham Too many comments about 3s from the new coach to think Banham isn't the choice, could also see her going to SA if there is a trade between Conn and SA #4 and A. Thomas would be one of my guesses, but I'm sure Conn would be happy with Tuck and Banham so who knows?
5. Dallas Powers A while ago the GM said something along the lines of "a star at every position" Powers is the closes thing to a star left IMO, and fits a need.
6. LA C. Williams USF basically flipped a coin between Williams and Mitchell chose Williams because she seems a closer match to the injury loss player R. Williams than Mitchell. LA was clearly looking for another scorer when they brought in Riquana.
7. Was Mitchell She does a little bit of everything, seems like a good fit with Washington's roster.
8. PX Alleyne PX can afford to defer, Alleyne is a top half of the draft player so why not get one this year when they aren't likely to be in the top 10 next year either.
9. Indy Copper Indy needs a back up for Coleman, Copper just seems like a Fever type, and it screws NY which Indy always does.
10. Chi J. Jones Chicago fans freak-out when Jones is at 10, but she will still need to bring it to not be Ch. parker 2.0
11. Atl Boyette maybe involved in a trade to SA with Schimmel for #2, or maybe fills the size/speed combo for Atlanta that Hamblin couldn't. Falling posts isn't the typical M.O. of a draft but might play out this year.
12. NY Holmes NY goes with the safe pick here, she has the size to play SF, and does everything well, if not great.

13. Atl Alston Amyrest had a lot of assists and a good assist to TO ratio, Atl might prefer to convert an athletic combo guard with a 3 ball than go with true point without one.
14. Minn Hamblin a rim protector to back up Fowles on a team that plays a decent amount of half court ball, seems like a fit.
15. Conn Knight Conn's new coach likes three, new assistant coach came from UFGC, Weisner is too similar to Banham, Knight can play some 2, 3, or 4, maybe A. Thomas gets traded if Knight sticks.
16. Atl Bulgak If Lyttle decides to take the year off and Dantas misses some or all of the season as well, Atl becomes attack of the young posts with Gray, Burrdick, E. Williams, Boyette, and Bulgak.
17. LA Fagbenle Can Temi beat out Hamson for the last spot, well see.
18. Dallas C. Walker why not bring in a Texas connection, kind of R. Williams-esque.
19. Was Weisner they got their defensive 2 in the first round, now they get their shooter/scorer in the 2nd round. Maybe Hill ends up playing at the SF this season?
20. PX N. Johnson PX has enough option that if Niya never shot the ball she could still contribute. Now can she beat out locker room favorite Bias for that deep PG spot.
21. Indy B. Martin Copper can play 2 or 3 so why not bring in another strong defender to fill out the wing in Indy
22. Minn Walton Got a 5 out of the Pac 12 with Hamblin, now can bring in a solid 4/3 to fill out the roster, and stretch the floor.
23. Conn Graves someone trades for this pick, maybe a future 2nd rounder, maybe SA, when an inconsistent, but high potential player drops this far.
24. NY S. Richards New York grabs their SF conversion project at the end of the 2nd round.

25. SA K. Williams Hughes like OK
26. Sea Rydalch Seems like a Jenny B. type, maybe, I really don't know, but its the 3rd round
27. Conn B. Butler The coach in Conn likes the 3 ball, have i mentioned that, no one shoots more 3s than Butler.
28. Atl C. Williams A&M wow she fell really far, maybe Angel can help her fall in line. I have no idea why she was suspended but having an inconsistent season also hurts her case.
29. LA Fields played in LA, good defender.
30. Dallas Richardson-Smith bring on the wings for the Wings.
31. Was Galdeira Mike T looks where others do not
32. PX Seekamp Aussie connection, back up PG competition
33. Indy Cable give a local girl some publicity.
34. Chi Podkowa Blonde guard from DePaul it worked once
35. Minn Holivay she's 6'4" and blocks shots, but can she beat out Hamblin
36. NY Handford and NY gets a local kid who has a chance to be out the picks ahead of her to make the team, its a long shot, but it is a shot.

Very nice, Spooner. Looks like you pooled a lot of ideas and info from articles and came up with very credible mock draft that should be the envy of all those "experts" we keep hearing about.

I have no complaints with any of your picks for MIN (I have you trained). I have to think about Hamblin over Bulgak, but it would be very nice to have a choice between the two at #14.

This part irked me though. "Weisner is too similar to Banham". Confused
Weisner is more like Lucas. They're both straight up SG's who are almost identical in height and build. Banham is a combo guard who should be able to back up the PG if needed.

Which pros are you most looking forward to playing against?

http://www.wnba.com/news/wnba-draft-2016-questionnaire/

Quote:
Tiffany Mitchell: I’m definitely a big Seimone Augustus fan, and Diana Taurasi, so when I see them I may be a little star-struck.

Morgan Tuck: Maya Moore. When I first visited UConn, she was my host. She was a senior and I was in awe. It’s going to be really weird playing against her because she’s always been someone I’ve looked up to. The other person would be Candace Parker. She grew up 10 minutes from my hometown so I watched her play all through high school. My sister and I actually got her autograph at Friday’s randomly when we were really young so it’s going to strange to play against someone whose autograph you have.

Imani Boyette: I think every game is going to be super exciting and fun for me as a rookie. But obviously I enjoy playing Brittney Griner because we’re the same size. And I played her my freshman year, so it’s a great measuring stick against a great post player.

Not a fan of the word "trained" but I agree that Minny needs a post or two, and I know you like Walton and Holivay who are as good a post as any in the late 2nd or 3rd round, I could also see TCM's suggested K. Williams going there as well.

I like Bulgak better than Hamblin personally, but I think Hamblin's size and shot blocking is a better fit for the Lynx. They already have a stretch 4 option in Howard. Now if MaCarville is on board Bulgak could be a better option, and while I like my mock I wouldn't be shocked if both were gone before #14, and Minny might have to go in another direction.

I like my picks for NY, but #12 is really a mystery to me. I like Holmes, but I really can't figure out what the team is looking forward. I won't be shocked if we take Bulgak, Knight. S. Richards at #12, or if we pass on Copper if she is still there, I have no idea who we are going to pick.

BTW, in one of the articles I read that Knight has asthma. Should that be a concern for any team?

A player can have asthma and be perfectly fine if it is properly managed.

Lynx looking for help in Thursday's draft

http://www.startribune.com/lynx-looking-for-help-in-thursday-s-draft/375635281/

Quote:
The team’s hope: To get a player who will stick on the roster and see meaningful minutes as a rookie.

“And that’s a tall task when you’re picking at 14,” Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said. “A tall task. We’ll need a little luck. So I’m hoping for luck.”

When your offseason acquisitions include names like Porsha Roberts and Keisha Hampton, you're relying way too much on much on luck. I like the Katerina Elhotova signing on blind faith, but even that was like "lucky Whalen was able to help us find somebody."

Quote:
The Lynx still could use:

• A backup guard, particularly behind Augustus, who has been hampered by injuries.

• A stretch forward, a role Peters often filled.

• Another big body who can defend low and spell Fowles.

I don't like the order these are presented and I hope that's not significant. The order if prioritized should be flipped.

Quote:
Reeve said she and assistant coach Shelley Patterson have put in more work scouting this draft class than they did the last three years combined.

“At 14, that player will probably have some warts to their game,” Reeve said. “But we’re looking for someone with a work ethic, a competitive drive. Maybe they’ll be raw, but they might have a big upside.”

In a best-case scenario, a top shooting guard could fall to the Lynx like Kahleah Copper of Rutgers or Courtney Walker from Texas A&M. If they are gone, the Lynx could look at post players Ruth Hamblin of Oregon State, Rachel Hollivay of Rutgers, Bashaara Graves of Tennessee or Temi Fagbenle of Southern California.

I'm pretty sure this author is clueless about women's college basketball, so he must have been given guidance from somewhere or someone to come up with these names. If Walker is really considered a bigger priority than Hamblim, oh boy... we need more than luck.
