The Griner/Griffith comparison is interesting, as they are completely different players at the same position who can just take over.
Though I'm a big Yo fan, I'll go with Griner because you decide who wins the game by who scores the most points, and Griner is better at that part of it.
Very close call, either way ... |
Yet people LOVE point guards who were either unable or unwilling to learn to score.

Odd that Brunson is just a #7 seed. Cash vs. Vandersloot is way too close.

If you asked me who I trusted more, with a game on the line, either on offense or defense, I'm picking Yo.
Apropos of nothing, I'd love to see what the rebounding record would like like if the WNBA had existed when Yo came out of college.

I feel like that's a good segue-way to re-post this video:

The comment at 1m10s sums up why, to me, Ticha is the GOAT point guard: how do you lead the league in assists six years in a row, when literally everybody in the building knows you don't want to shoot?

Just happen upon this article related to two legends.
Quote: |
I recently spoke to Sheryl Swoopes about what was the difference between playing with Bird and Cooper.
“First of all, they are both totally different players when I think about Sue, I played with a year in the Olympics and a year in Seattle. Sue is a true point guard; she sees the floor very well; she understands the game and knows how to be a leader,” said Swoopes. “She also knows how to set her teammates up, and that was Sue Bird’s ability from a point guard’s standpoint was to just lead her team.”
And the understanding she always had of the game. I have always respected her for that, and when I look at Coop, Coop is just a flat out scorer she could just score. She handles the ball a lot, she created a lot for her teammates like myself, Tina Tina, Janeth Arcain, and everybody. When I think about her game, she was just a scorer. Some people can shoot, and some people can score. There is a difference she was a scorer, which meant she fill it up in many different ways and was unstoppable.
As her teammate, there were moments when she do something I would sit there or when I was on the court where it was male or female, players weren’t supposed to do some of the things she was doing. I absolutely enjoyed my time playing with Cynthia Cooper. |

And when she was leading the league in assists, there were a couple years she was playing on the lowest-scoring team.

Says something about how overrated most of Cash's pro career was that she's debatable to beat someone who shouldn't have made it through the first round. After her injury, Cash was basically a good role-player, just for a long time. Three years of being elite and then a decade of being Kayla Thornton makes a #5 seed seem high to me. |

I had Cash and Sloot both as #8 seeds

Region A Round 2

All the Aussies should thank me, as Lauren Jackson and Penny Taylor were originally in the same region and would likely have met in this round. I said they should be separated.

Charles vs. Katie Smith isn't that close. I mean, Smith should win, but Charles has a solid early lead.

I voted Charles. Smith is a slightly upgraded version of what Richyyy said about Swin Cash. She was never the same after her 2004 injury.

Not having Twitter I can neither vote or see the totals. My board is clean on the W and the N fields. I lost Yolanda Griffith, DeWanna Bonner, and Deanna Nolan in the B field. And Taj over Cappie was my biggest upset on the board, and kept me from a clean A first round. I had Griffith over Cash in round 2, so that one is gone. My only upset is Whalen over Delle Donne for that round.

I know I'm coming in late on the Sloot conversation and I'm too young to have watched Griffith play (though her statistical resume speaks for itself), but she's definitely being underrated by some. She's setting a completely new bar for point guards, absurdly ahead of everyone else, and doing it as the best player on her team.
Last year she collected 300 assists, 258 the year before. The next highest tally is Ticha's 236. Bird's best is 221, Whalen's 199. And Sloot is doing it while also being a highly efficient scorer! I think Griffith is probably still ahead of her at this point but once Sloot becomes the first player to average a points/assists double-double it will be a different conversation.

I'm surprised to see Jackson winning has handily as she is. I think it's deserved, but DelleDonne is current, extremely popular, and underseeded.

I agree. I think it very likely based upon career arc that in 4 or 5 years (maybe even less) she would rightfully have a claim to this.
I just think there is a lot of projecting going on in people's minds where they might be thinking about where she is now and what that will mean, and are using that anticipated future to create a more equitable matchup since we are talking about the totality of Griffith's career. And when we start thinking about all the things Sloot is likely to accomplish down the road, she starts to match up quite favorably against Yo. But really that isn't fair to Yo having to go up against hypothetical future accomplishments while she is locked into her real world, actual accomplishments.

Underseeded is correct. She's already one of the 10 greatest players in league history.

I agree. But today she was up against one of the 5 greatest.

Yes. I would rank her above every one of the 3 seeds, and perhaps above Cooper as well.

Hahaha. Like, I want to know who the contrarians are who voted to make this anything but unanimous for either of them.
I'd accuse pilight of unabashed homerism, but Angel isn't a member of the Dream anymore. |
I'll bee dat. I voted for Catchings, over my favorite (active) player, but I did cast a "protest vote" for Swin. #HateHard
