Hello,
I am asking for book suggestions. I recently got a couple of Amazon Gift cards and I intend to spend them on something that I cannot buy over here in Europe. So I thought, basketball books!
Last time I was in the U.S., I brought the three Pat Summit books and Brittney Griner's biography.
Are you aware of any biographies or other books (stories, inspirational, whatever) related to women's basketball? Professional, college or even high school.
Or some good men's basketball related books. Even sports in general. (Good is the requirement for these)
I thought this thread could be helpful for others too.
Thanks in advance.

Perhaps the best book on basketball I have read is Bill Simmons' "Book of Basketball." Simmons annoys me, and he doesn't have a great deal of respect for the women's game, but he's an excellent writer and the book is exceptional.
I'm not a big fan of biographies, and the women's ones especially are extremely worshipful, so I find it hard to get through them sometimes.

I have two books, both decades old, if you're interested in the history of women's basketball in the U.S.
Joan S. Hult and Marianna Trekell, A CENTURY OF WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: From Frailty to Final Four. Copyright 1991. Published by the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport. An anthology of the history of women's basketball, focusing on college basketball. Available in paperback and there are cheap, used copies on Amazon.
Pamela Grundy and Susan Shackelford, SHATTERING THE GLASS: The Remarkable History of Women's Basketball. Copyright 2005. A chronicle of women's basketball in the U.S. from its invention in the late 19th century through the early 2000s. Available in hardcover or paperback and expensive. But there are cheap, used copies on Amazon.

Venus to the Hoop. The story of the 96 Olympics team is very good.

It's an older one, but I recommend "In These Girls, Heart Is a Muscle" by Madeline Blais. Very well written fun and interesting story. Then-future Stanford star Jamila Wideman plays a central role.

Thank you for the reference to Barnstorming America. Keeping fingers crossed that I have a screenwriter that has done some work on Hallmark and more. |

"Barnstorming" would make a great basis for a movie. My Mom and I both enjoyed the book a lot. Some great stories in there.

Basketball On Paper by Dean Oliver
is a bog standard entry into the fancier stats that have come along.
Mostly dudes, but Tamika Catchings gets a nice shout out.

The advanced stats primer ... my biggest claim to fame in basketball is that I'm in the acknowledgements. Sorry to brag, but I'm pretty proud of that.

Well, congrats on that. Oliver is no lightweight, now with the Wizards. Wonder if he'll pitch any ideas over to Thibault.

A slightly different take and angle on women's basketball, this is the memoir of a Division I player from her recruitment in high school through her four years at Davidson. Believe her time overlapped with Curry.
I got into a groove and read it in an evening - thought it was insightful and incredibly well written.
It's all about resilience, folks.
