Atlanta:
*Bentley had the 2nd best plus/minus on Connecticut when she played for them......and still has a positive plus/minus in Atlanta....Clarendon has the worst plus/minus in the league.

Chicago:
*DeSheilds,Dolson and Coates all have top 25 plus/minus.Coates plays limited minutes,so I won't read too much into her numbers.
*Vandersloot has a negative plus/minus despite playing most of her minutes with DeShields and Dolson. The plus/minus numbers would suggest that Vandersloot is a defensive liability.
*Gabby has the worst plus/minus on Chicago and is almost last in the league.....And it’s not because she’ a bad player...Gabby is playing out of position.Gabby is a liability at both ends of the court
*There's is big offensive fall off when Sloot,Dolson or DeShields aren't on the court.
*Chicago should definitely be a playoffs team...but Stocks and her lineup(Gabby playing PF)

Connecticut:
*A.Thomas leads Connecticut in plus/minus and is among the league leaders.
*Despite playing starter minutes,Ogwumike and J.Thomas have two of the worse plus/minuses on Connecticut ....very interesting.

Dallas:
Powers and Chong both had a positive plus/minus.....Dallas waived Chong then traded Powers....Romero's plus/minus is among the leagues worse.

LV:
Swords leads LV in plus/minus...and is only 1 of 2 LV players with a positive "Raw" plus/minus for the season...Swords +22...Hamby +2.

Those are their “raw plus/minus” figures, not net.

This sort of thing is why +/- is a terrible stat. It doesn't represent an ability of the player. Clarendon was the best on Atlanta in +/- last season. Other than assists, her numbers are pretty much the same as last year. Are we really to believe that 3.5 assists per 36 minutes is the difference between being an All Star and being the worst player in the league?

True...however....Bentley has performed at a higher level than Clarendon.

Seattle's bench is very suspect imo.....Almost every bench player has a net plus/minus lower than 12.

And is an illustration of how coach rotations can heavily affect these things. Hughes, in virtually every game, plays 5 bench players simultaneously, trusting them to survive without doing too much damage while all his starters rest. Most coaches sprinkle the bench players in and use starters in a staggered progression to help keep the team flowing. It'll be a large part of why so many bench players for Seattle have nearly the same +/-, they're all out there for the same minutes. |

Yep..and why all 5 Seattle starters have a plus/minus in the top 20.

I think there is a middle ground between “tells us everything” and tells us nothing.
For whatever reason, Atlanta didn’t perform well when Clarendon was on the court. It may have to do with her, or it may have to do with who she was playing with.

And to clarify, if you look at the numbers, Clarendon doesn't have the worst +/- in the league for the entire season. The player at the top of that list is Atlanta-Clarendon - it doesn't include her minutes in Connecticut. |

Precisely. It's actually a very good stat with the proper context, net being preferable to raw obviously because of the adjustment for minutes.

Thanks for the data. There are pluses and minuses to the statistic, but if you use it as a tool it is quite interesting. I don't really put much stock in the net stat because it is far too driven by coaching rotation patterns. It is also driven by garbage time where team philosophy on how to finish out games comes into play.
As with all stats it is easy (and fun) to read too much into them, but there is some real truth hidden in the numbers.
