Quote:
Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus has rejected an application for citizenship from U.S. basketball player Kathryn Douglas, making it impossible for her to join the national team.

Douglas, the leading player of the Vilnius TEO women’s basketball club, had applied for citizenship in order to represent Lithuania at the women’s world championships in Brazil in September. Douglas, 27, had been invited to the US national team but rejected the invitation, saying she wanted to represent Lithuania.
Shocked WTF?

Who would she have been offered a spot over? Alana Beard or Semione Agusutus?

The answer? Neither one.

Call me crazy, but I'd take Katie over both of them!! She's not a ball hog and while Alana gets more circus shots made, KT is a solid player. Seimone is an unproven ballhog! There I said. Now let the shit begin to fall!

I would take her over both too, but a good part of that is because she is my favorite player. I would take her ahead of most anyone. But I find it real hard to believe that USA Basketball would, particularly given that she hadn't participated in any of the prep tournaments.

Perhaps she was asked to TRY OUT FOR the US team, with nothing like a guaranteed spot? Or perhaps the Baltic Times is, simply, wrong.

Oh, and Seimone's not a ballhog. Confused

I doubt they asked her out-right to come and join the team. Maybe they asked her to tour with the group they sent to Australia or they called her for a tryout/workout type of deal. Even then, I doubt she just said no. She probably had a legit excuse.

Pending citizenship approval, which didn't happen? It seems very unlikely her name would appear there sans her knowledge or approval.
This would make a lot more sense if she had married Arvydas Sabonis! Wink

The whole Lithuanian thing has confused me since day one. Greece, I could understand (and wouldn't mind). But I would find it very hard to believe that she applied for Lithuanian citizenship.

I'm also a lil bit surprised they turned her down, actually, if there's any grain of truth to the entire story. Lithuania's a bit hoops-mad.

(Oh, and if the knighthood thing is true, she'd be Dame Kathryn. Sounds like a nifty nickname, actually. Wink)

If you've been watching this year's Lynx, please tell me who you'd like to take the shots Seimone should have (in your view) passed up.

Back to Katie: I find it hard to believe she'd bag on a clear invite to join USA Basketball, but the rest of the story makes perfect sense to me: she has Lithuanian ties, they wanted and expected her on their team, but the Prez of the country applied the law and decided he just couldn't find a way to do it. If the USA invite she turned down was "come try out," rather than "we want you," I believe the whole thing.

A little clarification on the story and props to accommodatingly who basically got it right. This was in the bottom of a story in the Norwich Bulletin about Douglas' injury.

Quote:
Douglas, an overseas star the past two offseasons playing for Lithuanian club TEO and a native of Indianapolis, has no family connection to the Baltic nation. She turned down an invitation to participate in three U.S. training camps across March and April, which conflicted with her European schedule.

"She was never offered a spot on the World Championship team," Caroline Williams, director of communications for USA Basketball, said Monday night by cell phone. "She was asked to be in the pool of players under consideration for the team and that's a pretty large group."
