The league site doesn't have the attendance numbers for the first two games. Anyone have them?
Thanks.

Second day of the freshly launched Women's Super League in England and the BBC's report contains this:
Quote: |
Like Wednesday's opening evening of the WSL, when Arsenal beat Chelsea 1-0 and Doncaster Belles won 1-0 at Lincoln, there were good crowds at both games.
Liverpool attracted an attendance of 835, while 602 turned up for the game in Birmingham.
With attendances in the past at club games averaging little more than 100, this first set of fixtures in the new league is encouraging for the future of the women's game. |
So at least your attendances are in four digits; it's kinda sad when 835 and 602 are 'good crowds'.

today's game at Philadelphia(vs. majicJack FC) is supposed to have really crappy weather, 50 degrees plus windy and heavy rain. The team would be lucky to see 1,000 people show up.

The league seems to be in even worse shape than last season. It's two "new" teams, Western New York & magicJack are drawing terrible crowds so far. The Flash's opener drew only 2,164 while magicJack's lack of advertising & stadium seating(reported at just 318) has seen the team draw 1,224 & 1,008 in in first two home games. Florida Atlantic's "stadium" only seats 318, and tickets sold after 318 forces people to stand or sit on the sidelines.
WPS attendance numbers:
Rank. - Team - average(# home games)
1. Atlanta Beat - 3,486(3)
2. Boston Breakers - 3,474(2)
3. Sky Blue FC - 2,910(1)
4. Western New York Flash - 2,164(1)
5. magicJack FC - 1,116(2)
6. Philadelphia Independence - 0(0)

Another pitiful attendance figure--this time from Western New York--1,704 is all that show up. Perhaps a team in Buffalo wasn't such a hot idea?
Yeah I know that's where the owner with the cash was, but really? Buffalo?

I stand corrected--the game was in Rochester. I forgot WNY has the hairbrained idea of playing in both cities. 1704 in Rochester makes it even worse, as Rochester was supposed to be a big supporter of women's soccer. Whoops.
I will continue to hold out hope the WPS pulls their collective marketing heads out of their asses and the league actually survives through this season and there is D1 soccer in 2012, but with attendance already off by 1,000 through 10 games, it doesn't look good. Too bad I'm no where near a WPS team or I'd be there.

I'm holding out hope, too. Especially if the west coast expansion comes through for 2012(Vancouver, Los Angeles & Seattle or Portland). magicJack is a joke(drawing just 952 on Sunday) and apparently the Flash aren't advertising either. Would like to see the Red Stars back in 2012 as well. They could dump magicJack unless the owner does indeed have deep pockets.

Atlanta drew the largest crowd of the season today with 6,125 in their lose against Philadelphia. Four out of the six teams are averaging below 3,000, and it's two new teams, magicJack & Western New York, are drawing the smallest crowds. I bet the league wishes the RedStars & Freedom were still around.

Nice showing Atlanta--4,000 over the league average so far. Here's hoping they can keep it up and draw more--How many does that college stadium hold?

And Atlanta is right at where they were after 4 games last year. In 2010 after 4 games their att. average was 4,145. In 2011 after 4 games, the average is 4,146. Let's hope the numbers don't start dropping like they did last year. In the 5th home game last season Atlanta drew 3,111.

The league had some nice crowds this weekend.
@ FC SkyBlue - 2,947
@ Boston - 6,128
@ WNY Flash(Buffalo) - 8,076
me thinks the Flash should play all their games in Buffalo.

This game was played in Rochester at Sahlen's Stadium where the other games were held.
It also featured hometown girl Abby Wambach on the other team.
