As recently as 1968, Texas Girls Basketball was what we played in junior high physical education class. Having learned how to play basketball from my older brother, the six-girl team concept just didn't make sense to me.
You could only dribble three times, and then had to pass the ball off. They had the two-guards on the offensive end and two forwards on the defensive end scheme as this article indicates, but we also had two "rovers" who could actually cross the center line and play on both ends of the court. The guards and forwards had to stay on their respective ends. Totally weird to me and I told my seventh grade P.E. teacher boldly: "This ain't how Cousey played!" She just had to roll her eyes.
I tried to play that game for two days and quickly asked for the whistle so I could officiate. I must also disclose that I am old enough to qualify for one of those "grannie" teams...wonder if we will have any down my way?
