Former Jackson State women's golf star Shasta Averyhardt made history last weekend. She became only the fourth African American to make it to the LPGA. While at Jackson State she helped lead the Lady Tigers to four straight Southwestern Athletic Conference Golf Championships.
Averyhardt, who had been a fixture on the LPGA Futures Tour most of the year, fought through tough weather conditions in the final round of the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament.
She began the day tied for eighth place, but a difficult, wind-blown, rain-dampened round of 7-over 79 landed her outside the top 20 into a tie for 22nd. It was a disappointing finish for the 6-foot-1, former Lady Tiger, but it was a finish good enough for a spot in the LPGA's Priority Category 16, just outside the full-status top-20 membership for 2011.

I followed the scores Sunday. Unfortunately it was the cold and the wind and the rain. Shasta started the day in position for full exemption early but her train left the tracks quickly, as it did for many others, so she did very well to get to the house with a 2nd tier exemption given how bad things started out for her. She just gutted out an ugly round basically.

The best part, she has an accounting degree to fall back on. |
