For many in college towns across America, there is no more exciting time than the day of a big game in the fall. But for the wives of big-time college football coaches, Saturdays in the fall are met less with anticipation than with anxiety bordering on dread. They watch the games from the stands as helplessly as any fan, but with the knowledge that the outcome will affect their personal lives acutely.
"The emotional roller coaster and the need to win is so intense that for the wives, who have no control over what happens on the field, there are times when you want to burst into tears," Mrs. Fulmer said on Wednesday, as the sting of the loss to Georgia was only beginning to subside. "You don't have time to celebrate, and you don't have time to lick your wounds. We win together and we lose together."
Case in point: immediately after the game, Mrs. Fulmer had to play host to a houseful of high school recruits. "We went through a pretty painful dinner, actually," she said. |
That same sort of thing, of course, is just what the significant others of women's basketball coaches must endure.

I just remembered that I might need to explain what my avatar and signature are all about...looks like here might be the best place to put it.
They're referring to Julie Nagel, who played field hockey at Appalachian State. She was trying to get home for fall break last week when she was in a bad car crash, and she died the next morning. She was only 19.
Their team hasn't played a game since that happened last Saturday, for obvious reasons, but they have two games and the conference tournament left. Here's a link to the story if you want to look.

The whole thing apparently hit the whole athletic department rather hard. There were all sorts of people, including the athletic director himself, at her funeral on Wednesday in Maryland.
So there's the story, if you wondered.
On a happier note, Appalachian State beat Georgia Southern in football today, 24-7 in front of over 21,000 people...a game they weren't supposed to win. Definitely a good thing to boost their spirits after a pretty painful seven days for them.
