Just saw this on twitter.

My heart is broken - that was my favorite Western Conference team.

hopefully the Bay Area talks will pan out. Mel Greenberg just said they move, as did Whiz's quotes.

Even Whiz said he had no idea.

It's not surprising that the Monarchs folded, in some ways, given the small crowds this summer and the continuing deterioration of the Kings, but it is surprising that there were no hints that this was going to happen.

The Maloofs, though, make their money in Las Vegas, which is struggling in this economy, and the Kings are losing tons of money, and apparently the $500,000 or so that the Monarchs lost last summer (just a wild guess) was too much to absorb.

If Chris Cohan suffers the same fate in Oakland and is forced to sell the Warriors, it could be an easy transition.

I'm just floored! I never saw this one coming. Shocked

yes, count me in when it comes to hoping the team will stay intact and move to the Bay Area.

If they fold, I worry this could be the beginning of the end for the WNBA...not necessarily this summer, but maybe in couple of years down the road.

Holy shit.

Interesting that the league quickly put out a release that they are in talks to relocate to the Bay Area: http://www.wnba.com/news/monarchs_091120.html

Wow, just wow.

Another original WNBA franchise gone.

Bekka Brunson just tweeted she found out by reading Chantelle Anderson's tweet about the team.

No one told her.... Evil or Very Mad

There is no excuse for that. Pick up the damn phone, Maloofs, and call all the players.

I am so saddened by this... I hope the Bay Area talks pan out...

There has been talk of Cohan selling to Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison...

But it's never been made clear how serious that was.

Oh shit! Too much info all at once!

Monarchs fold. Maybe moving to the Bay Area. And Lynx could maybe move up in the draft to boot?!

Palpitations...

The WNBA doesn't have a lot of time to get a Bay Area deal done.

Schedules have to be made, arenas have to be booked. That process has to get underway months and months before the season kicks off. It's now late November. Dispersal or relocation...got to be decided soon.

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeit. This sucks, especially for Monarchs fans. And to not tell the players - that's just chicken sheeeeeeeeeeeeeit.

Keeping my fingers crossed for a relo.

Maloofs, you can't absorb the 'Narchs loosing half a mill. You really think that amount of $$ will even scratch the surface of the gaping black hole of $$ that is an NBA team? Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeit. Rolling Eyes

the maloofs said that they folded the monarchs so THEY COULD FOCUS ON THE KINGS FRANCHISE! THEY FOLDED THE MONARCHS BECAUSE THEY ARE AFRAID OF WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE KINGS!!! Does this really make sense?
