I wish they could just keep Marty Evans. Since she took over, they have not lost any tournaments. They have all signed on. They may add one in Canada which would be great. They have been getting great support in Canada.

Didn't she say she wasn't interested?

I heard Jeffrey Pollack might be the guy. That would be different.

Ward is a golf outsider whose ascent in the interview process has taken industry observers by surprise because he doesn’t have the “ideal experience” the headhunting firm Spencer Stuart identified in the “position and candidate specification” document it released when the commissioner’s search was launched. Ward has not worked in the golf or professional sports business.

What sucks is the previous commisioner Ty Votah (sp), was really good.

Unfortunately I think he left due to conflict of interest. You see, he was dating Sophie Gustafson and it was not a big deal until the final tournament, the championship whatever. So what happened was Sophie was in contention, and there had to be a ruling with a few holes to play, and it was really subjective, did a ball move on the green and did Sophie cause it to move. Well at that point the whole subject of her dating the commissioner came out. He resigned not long after that.

It's a damn shame because he was really good for the LPGA...

Michael P. Whan, a veteran marketing executive, is the choice to take over for ousted Carolyn Bivens.

Evans is in South Korea for an LPGA event. She has tried in the three months since Bivens was forced out to restore relationships with several LPGA sponsors. The tour has lost key tournaments in Corning, N.Y., and Kingsmill, Va.

It hopes to have about 25 tournaments next year, down from 33 events in 2008.

Well, I wish the guy would start right now and Evans would stay on until the end of the year. Unless something changes, in terms of events, the LPGA needs to develop some way to give newbies a chance. It was tough enough for rookies with 30 plus tournaments. But with only 24, and some of those are limited field, even a strong rookie, exempt for all full field events is going to have a tough time I think.

The biggest rookie obstacle historically seems to have been just learning the new courses, and getting their travel legs steady enough to feel comfortable week to week.

I'm not sure why I haven't heard this before, but if I was a rookie, I'd get me a friend willing to caddie my first year, we'd get in a car, and go on the road and do my practice round, and course homework at every location during the off season. I'd do that plus just get used to practicing on the road. The idea is to have a dossier of material on the course and a basic plan of how you will play every hole before you even get there. It's no different than say Indy car testing at a specific track. The idea is to have a reference point under specific conditions for every hole, and every shot.

I think you could play a practice round, then spend 4 - 8 hours practicing your current weaknesses and course specific shots. Then go out and play it again, make some adjustments to your notes. Then file the course dossier away and hit the road to the next location.

Further, I bet the LPGA or local course could set them up with a host family for the practice, and then use the same host family when they play the tournament.

Besides adding full scale events, the LPGA will be competing with other tours like the LET, KLPGA and JLPGA, for top players from week to week, just because of the economic as well as huge gaps in a schedule.

The LPGA should consider going back to their older plan of smaller events, smaller purses, smaller markets, and try to add some lower tier events that can compete with the foreign tours to help fill the gaps. Otherwise you are going to have LPGA players playing foreign tours, maybe even when the LPGA is playing here.

With only 24 weeks to play, and some of those they are not auto qualified for.

Just read the press coference, plus his experience.

Finding a top notch marketing guy, a CEO, a guy that has experience in the golf business, and has an understanding of and passion for golf, sounds to me like they found the right guy.

So far, I'm impressed. I do hope they played golf with the guy first. Well Alfy has played with him I guess.
