I got this email today, and thought it was pretty cool:

Good Morning -

The Houston Astros will be celebrating the Houston Coments and their four WNBA Championships on Tuesday August 4th versus the San Francisco Giants.

We would like to invite you out to Minute Maid Park to honor the Houston franchise with a special discounted ticket offer.

This is a great way to honor the Comets as well as visit Minute Maid Park .

Attached are all the details regarding the discounted ticket offer.

For more information regarding your special night please contact Cody Arnold at 713-259-8315 or Rob Acord 713-259-8337.

We look forward to having you part of our special Comets Night at Minute Maid Park .

Hopefully there will be a Mighty Sea of Red at that game, and I have a feeling that Cynthia Cooper might make an appearance at this game, and Van Chancellor, too.

so it takes Major League Baseball to honor the team, not the W itself.

Interesting.... Evil or Very Mad

Why didn't they buy the team?

Donna O twitterview this afternoon (3:00 ET, I think)

I'll be away from my computer (and I'm having trouble tweeting from my phone)

I wanted to ask Donna, how she feels about a MLB team honoring the Comets.

Maybe the Astros would set up a wall display honoring the Comets in MMPark?
That might be a good place for memorabilia and maybe a trophy or two.
Permanently honor the team in Houston.

And yes... what would be wrong with each team taking a moment before all the home openers to honor the Comets?

I wasn't expecting to see that. If Sheryl will not play this season, she should attend. That's great! I am going to see if the game is sold out.

Hey, MLB is a business! The 'Stros know that there is only one summer draw in Houston right now, so why not try to reach out to Comets fans and see if they'd be interested in following the local MLB team? This is a great move by the 'Stros.

bballfan, that's probably all of it in a nutshell. The TC and MM where mere blocks apart. Even if the following for the Comets wasn't as big as it once was during championship days, people downtown still know the fans were there. It would be a big draw to reach out to the fans of the Comets and may even win you new fans.

Besides, Dray may not like how Les snowed the city to get the arena built in the first place. It was a nice gesture, nevertheless the reason.

I agree, that's probably the main reason why they are doing this. But its still a great idea and a way for all the Comets fans to honor their team.

I don't know much about the owners for the Astros, but maybe they couldn't afford it.

I hope there will be a big big turn out for this event regardless the reasoning behind it. No one else has honored the Comets (that I am aware of). If it brings some new Astro fans so be it.

I hope everyone comes out. It sounds like a fun time to me. Smile

Not every WNBA city has a major-league baseball team.

In Sacramento, the only other pro sports team besides the Monarchs during the summertime, is the Sacramento River Cats, a minor-league baseball team (AAA-level).

It would be nice if the River Cats did some kind of cross-promotion with the Monarchs, and vice versa.

I recall the past couple of summers I've been here a Storm Player throwing a ceremonial pitch .. Sue, Betty, Sheryl have all done this ...

IIRC, Taurasi threw out the ceremonial first pitch at an Arizona Diamondbacks game a few years ago.

The way the Astros are struggling this season there may be A LOT of tickets for Comets fans to purchase to the August 4 game.

By the way, according to astros.com, August 4 is a "Double Play Tuesdays" promotion: Double Play Tuesdays presented by PowerAde. Score 2 Outfield Deck tickets for $2 with the presentation of the labels from ANY two 32 oz. bottles of PowerAde. Tickets may be purchased up to four (4) weeks prior to each game. Offer only available at the Minute Maid Park Box Office.

So far, I haven't found a mention of the 'stros honoring the Comets posted on astros.com, yet.[/i]

What is it with the wrong NL Central teams making me want to like them? I'm a Cubs fan, blast it! I don't want to like the Reds and the Astros and the Cardinals! But since the Astronomicals are doing this, and the Reds have two of the greatest radio guys still left in the business, and the Cards have Pujols, I'm not sure what to think about that division anymore.

I'm supposed to hate them all!!! Confused

Kudos to the Astros for doing this! Whatever their motive, it is a very classy move. I'm a diehard Cubs fan, but hats off to the 'Stros! Cool

A couple of Sky players were at one of the Cubs' games last summer. I don't remember if they threw the ceremonial first pitch. IIRC, they did sing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" during the 7th inning stretch.

The Tigers have had Ruth Riley and Swin Cash throw out first pitches, and the Lions honored the Shock after at least one of their titles.

Same with the Twins. Seimone Augustus has thrown out the first pitch. I don't know if any Lynx has done the "Let's Play Hockey" call before the Wild play.

A few players were at the Twins game the other night to sing at the 7th inning stretch too.

Astros' sales ticket representative, Cody Arnold, confirmed the Astros are indeed holding a "Houston Comets Night" on August 4. Arnold said the Astros are "working on solidifying a few ex-players to attend; but, we haven't confirmed any of that, yet. We're trying to get everyone to come to the game and remember the Comets."

The Nationals can use all the support they can get, so it would behoove them to get a couple of Mystics players over there to throw out the first pitch.

I'm sure C. Coop and Monica Lamb can make it...they still live in the area.
