LA leads 2-0 at halftime.

Marta scored twice, with just minutes in between.

Looks like Marta only scored twice, though I thought she scored three times.

Sol wins 2-0. No surprise.

That didn't take long for Marta to show what she's capable of. Nice outing for the Sol.

It was a good game despite the outcome. The pregame cheesiness (with Julie Foudy, her kid, and Governor Corzine) was great. Less great: Rampone left late in the first half with a hamstring injury; the two goals came right after that on her side.
Sky Blue's second game is next Saturday, at this same venue in Bridgewater --after that they move to their real "home field."

I'll probably attempt to say something more in-depth later to give people more of an idea of the goings on, since this game wasn't broadcast, but while Marta was good, the combination of her up front with Duan was better.

Which is probably way obvious, but it's also just as obvious that the rest of the Sol's offense is going to be easily lost in the shuffle, when what is making this team so good is how much they already look like a team. They were possessing the ball a whole lot less, but sometimes it felt like they were LETTING us have the ball because they felt zero offensive threat when the Sky Blue had possession. We acted like we were passing the ball in a given direction rather than to other players. When Sol had possession, there was ALWAYS the sense of a threat that they might score. (At least, after the first twenty or so minutes. Rampone really anchored the back line and when she was taken out because of hamstring issues, they kind of fell apart and the LA attacks on goal got a lot more penetration.)

There's already a sense that LA has a team where the players anticipate where one another are going to be and are passing TO each other rather than near or just in the general area.

Also, once Rampone left the game the Sky Blue defense got terribly sloppy. Our idea of clearance was apparently kicking the ball further from the goal but directly toward, say, Miyama or Marta. Kacey White had several corner kicks sent perfectly into the box, but no one was there to guide them home. About five times, Heather went on a run only to be surrounded by four or so Sol players with no one coming up the center or other wing to support her. Twice LeBlanc fumbled the ball -- and one time just had it resting about a foot and a half away from her -- without going for it right away and not a single Jersey player even took a step toward the ball. Come on, at least move to force her to stop stalling.

Sky Blue are currently a team that are not functioning as a team and are fairly crippled by occasional bouts of apathy. Not making runs to support your teammate and not even trying to rush the keeper when they're running down the clock is unacceptable.

But yeah, Marta was pretty okay. I was sitting near some guy who turned to people and said, "She's the best in the WORLD, you know." To my shock, someone else responded, "No, Abby is. Wambach."

I wanted to tell them that Kelly Smith thinks they're both crazy. You know, just to piss them off.

I hope Christie Rampone is ok, hopefully its a minor injury.

Thanks five_to_the_third and sportsfanswhine for your recaps of the game.

Thanks for the recap. There are lots of Brazilians in NJ and they're loud mouths, so yeah, that's to be expected from time to time. Laughing

I hope she didn't remove her shirt after scoring one of her goals. Laughing

Nice write-up on Marta. I highly recommend this blog.
If anyone has a chance, check out Grafite's goal against Bayern Munich later. What a masterpiece.

I'm pretty much a n00b when it comes to this sport, but I thought Marta's assist in the first match was pretty impressive... can't wait to see these highlights.
