The WPS is the latest attempt at a top-flight women's league in the United States. The previous league, the WUSA, lasted all of three seasons and closed up shop in 2003. Now, the effort to put women's soccer back on the forefront has begun anew.

The WPS will begin play Sunday at Home Depot Center as the local side, the Los Angeles Sol, headlined by Brazilian star Marta, will host the Washington Freedom at 3 p.m.
