but you have to look at the Knicks, Rangers and Liberty and see some common problems in terms of culture and priorities. Coincidence? Something in the water? Hell, at least they all have that fancy practice facility up the road! |
They both have Canadian African American Lesbians employed in management?

Well, OK, I was trying to talk about two different things and managed to screw it up.
The commish's orientation is the difference that makes no difference. I'm not normally a formalist either. Context is everything. If I wanted to date Ms Orender or send her some porn, then it would make a difference. As to how she'll do as head of the W, it makes none whatsoever.
As for trolls, I consider Mynhood and ErieVern to be trolls, even though they wouldn't be included in your definition.

A few days ago, an extremely credible source had a conversation with some of my friends which relayed the following tidbits:
*the new commish will be female
*it won't be a name wnba fans will immediately recognize
*after learning her credentials, fans should agree with the selection
My friends probed further, asking:
would she stand up to Stern? Yes.
will she market the WNBA, not thinking of it as the NBA's little sister? Yes.
does this mean the end of "This is who I am?" Chuckle, yes, likely.
******************
It is to early to draw a conclusion, yet this fan is quite optimistic.

Herrade, pilight, and dtsnms are all good, knowedgable people as far as I am able to ascertain. While homophobic stereotypes are a reality, it is unfortunate that discussion of our new leader took to this tangent so quickly.
With a new commish, free agency fostering league parody, and increasing quality of play; the future may be bright for the WNBA.

I am glad someone is tracking down her pedigree as well, but the point of the matter is that in her recent past she has been successful. She has big time sports marketing experience on the men's side, which means she is accustomed to having a rather large budget for her program. It will be interesting to see if she can live in a smaller world and be equally successful in her marketing efforts.
I have to agree with the powers that be that she is the right mix of basketball and the business side of sports. If we find out that she wasn't the best of the best on the court, that will really not be a factor since she is no longer lacing up the kicks, but managing a league. If she can get the owners, coaches and players excited about being part of the WNBA, then that will be a step in the right direction.

It's parity, not parody. I'm not usually one to correct grammar and such, but parody has a very different meaning from parity and isn't exactly what we're after.

Donna Orender, Senior Vice President, PGA Tour Strategic Development, was tabbed at 5-1 Odds to be named the LPGA commissioner succeeding Ty Votaw, who has said this will be his last year.
-----------------------------------------------
Played in the Women's Basketball League from 1978-81 after an All-America career at Queens College in New York City. One of the most powerful women in golf. She's the fourth highest-ranked person at the PGA Tour and her husband, M.G. Orender, is a past president of the PGA of America and a course owner.
PLUSES: Also has experience negotiating TV deals. Likely is boxed in at the PGA Tour and will almost certainly not be a candidate to replace commissioner Tim Finchem when he steps aside, probably in five years.
MINUSES: With her deferred income package, Orender earns more than Votaw. Her hard-edged personality has produced success but also political enemies. Her support of the ill-fated move to put the Champions Tour on delayed tape on CNBC was seen by some as a career setback |

good job, David! she was a player and she has experience in pro sports development, sound like a very good fit to me. I particularly like that she knows about negotiating tv deals. very important for the continued growth of the W. and as for the "hard-edged" criticism, show me an aggressive hard-driving (and successful) woman in any field who hasn't gotten that kind of label (or worse.) I'd be more worried for the W if everybody thought she was as sweet as mary poppins. welcome, donna! |

My instinct is to deem all Republicans evil.
My heart and mind know better...many of their ideaologies are self-serving and hypocritical, yet there are good and bad people on both sides of the aisle.
Jerry Colangelo supports Republicans, yet he was also right beside David Stern fighting to get the league (WNBA) started.
Things must be looked at on a larger scale:
My views differ with Republicans, yet many are my friends.
People pushing religion frighten me, yet to some extent, it is nice they have guidance in their lives.

D'oh! OMG, am I ever embarrassed.
Thanks for the correction, pilight!
Yes parity is good...and in this case parody is bad. A local deejay does a dead-on impersonation of Kark Malone speaking of himself in first person...hilarious...my last sentence mad me think of his humorous piece this morning.
As one who (along with Slovy) hates when their, there, and they're; or then and than are confused...shame on me.

MB, don't be embarrassed. Check SFO's answer to my question in the link below.

I think the parody will be the name of the game this year. |
I've always liked that mistake. It provides me with amusing inspiration. If my printer worked, I would print it out and tape it to my computer. (Apologies to SFO if he's around, but, well, it *was* rather useful.)
*wandering in the general direction of the topic*
It shouldn't matter which side of the plate she swings from. That's not to say it doesn't matter to people. My first priority with her is that she does a damn good job running the league. That's what's going to matter in the end. Would people on both sides of the story have brought it up if a lesbian were appointed to the top post? Uh, yeah. Would it have affected people's assessment of her performance? Sadly, yes.
Can we be mature enough about it to set this damn issue on the shelf? Please, please, let the answer be yes.
