I will be sorry to see Graf go. I had a lot of respect for her knowledge of the game and I think she had a good working relationship with her team. I too, think she had a lot to deal with personnel wise that made things very difficult for her and the team. I hope the best for her.

From the jest of the posts on this topic, I get the feeling that most of you feel that Carrie was let go by Phoenix because of the season. I am not convinced at this point that it wasn't as much Carrie's idea as it was Phoenix management.

Carrie may have been using this position to get her a better offer with the Aussie national team. I hope they give her the job.....in a way. The USA will have a bigger fight on their hands if she is coach, IMO.

One thing this does, however, is makes it even more imperative that the Mercury players are in training camp before the season starts. They will be learning a new system and we proved this year that we don't have a lot of "make-up" time in the season to get the team on the same page.

BTW, I don't know how they do things in other cities, but in Phoenix, the head coach picks her staff. That said, Timmsy should be a consideration as well as Jennifer Gillom for an assistant spot.

As for who Phoenix gets, I hope, like cam, he/she has professional coaching experience. Like Keegan, I hope it is not someone who is pulled from the MNBA without experience.

Carol Anne, I doubt very seriously that Cheryl Miller will ever coach again in Phoenix.

Remember Cheryl's mustard-colored pantsuit? Ugh.

At least her pinstripes were cool...

Uh oh, that leaves out Bibby, Grumps. They need to be in training camp now, if they intend on learning his system.

Hmm the national team theory kind of fits. Jan Stirling is only on a two year extension so after the 2006 worlds the interview process begins again. Being a WNBL only coach will help Graffie in the selection process (yeah we punish success down here - onya BA) and she has the full support of the players so this could be a big opportunity for her.

It's unfortunate that there were so many ins and outs in the Phoenix roster this year, it should have been a better season for sure. Those two choke losses to the Lynx and Shock sure did come back to bite the Merc.

DD, I think you and I need to shout coach Graf a few ales in the Sweatbox bar when the Caps come to town. Wink

Thanks for your efforts over the past two seasons Carrie!

The Mercury apparently "refused" to renew Graf's contract, according to the AP.

Hasn't Taurasi been quite vocal about preferring male coaches? Unfortunately I can't help thinking an ex-Suns player will take over

She's said she preferes Male coaches, because that's what she always has had (until Graf)..Taurasi has been quite vocal about liking Graf as well, so her word doesn't really matter....

And anyway, it's already settled, Ray Romano is going to be the coach Twisted Evil

Thunder Dan is good looking.

At it was a MUTUAL decision not to renew the contract.

Unfortunately, with Timmsy, Penny & Snelly already entrenched in Phoenix, we had to move Carrie to make room for LJ under the CBA's controversial Aussie Cap.

how about karleen thompson? she deserves a shot at a head coaching job.

You had to remind me that the Sparks chose to let her go and hired Bimby. They should've at least given her a chance to prove herself. She was a part of the Sparks' most successful teams and the players respected her just as much as they did MC plus she knew each players' strengths. Bimby was sooooooo clueless!!! Look for the Sparks to trade Dixon and Mabika next season.

They really seemed to be in the doghouse and really not happy. Did I miss something or why didn't Mabika play? I don't remember reading that she was hurt. I wouldn't doubt it if she wanted out. Although I hope I am wrong because I love Mabika, but if she doesn't want to be here, nothing anyone can do.

Also, I think she plays way too much year round basketball and her body starts breaking down during the WNBA season it seems.

I would love to see the Sparks pick up Nikki Blue in the draft because she would be a great back up to Nikki T or a great backcourt mate. Nikki n Nikki show. I've heard the Sparks have been eyeing her for a while but we'll see. They also need another banger.

Lisa played with no heart this season and was never very aggressive. Fire's going out maybe? Well, thanks to Bimby!!!!!!! He needs to get out of coaching. Every team he touches, every inch of talent is sucked right out of it. Blah what a lame WNBA season for Sparks fans.

Rooting for Indiana with Williams (sentimental favorite) or UConn, er (bleh, spit, spit Laughing ) I mean Connecticut with my new favorite player Lindsey Whalen.

Listening to Teasley in the post-game press conference, she didn't sound too optimistic about her injury situation, so I wonder if the Sparks will need a new starting PG. Either as a starter or backup, Blue would be a nice fit for LA.

Does anyone know how career threatening Teasley's foot problems are?

except for 1 little problem....he's not a candidate at all. Well, I guess he is if he were to buy out the last 3 years on his contract at Pepperdine in order to take a pay cut to coach in the WNBA. He's making 6 figures per year currently. Is there any reason to believe he'd pay that, times 3, in order to take a 5 figure coaching job?

Westphal is a GREAT idea except for that crazy little thing called availibility....or, in his case, lack of availibility.

Paul Westphal would be a terrible choice unless he's changed his associates. I've had an impression, picked up from somewhere, that he's a far-right political Christian fundamentalist.

Here's a link to an unofficial record of a Rush Limbaugh show from 1996.

http://mtd.com/tasty/limbaugh-031296.txt

And here's a quote of the part about Limbaugh and Westphal being buddies.

o Rush starts off the show by making a remarkable offer: if
anyone wants to get an NBA coach fired, they should call him
because he can make this happen easily - all he has to do is
invite the guy to dinner. Rush is certain this is true, given
that last November, he and Marta hosted both Paul Westphal of the
Phoenix Suns and Don Nelson of the NY Knicks when the Suns came
to town to play; Westphal and Rush have been friends for a few
years now, and his assistant coach was Don Nelson's son, so it
was natural to invite the Knicks coach, Don Nelson Sr., along as
well.

However, that might not have been a good idea for the coaches.
Paul Westphal, of course, was fired a couple of months ago, and
now Nelson, who was fired last year by the Warriors, has been
fired by the Knicks, so Rush is going 2 and 0 when it comes to
firings following dinner invitations.

Westphal called Rush last night to point this out, and he gave
Rush a list of NBA cities he'd like to work in, just in case Rush
wanted to invite any of those coaches to dinner and get them
fired, too. That way Rush could create some openings in the field
for his friend.

Rush is more than willing to help so he'll be glad to extend an
invitation to these other coaches the next time they show up in
town; however, some of them have already come to New York for
their one visit a year, so Westphal might have to hang tough for
a year before Rush can work his magic and help him find a new
gig.

Maybe Westphal doesn't agree with Limbaugh's gay-baiting and feminist-baiting, or maybe he's changed his views since that time, but it'd sure be something I'd want to know. Anyone know?

Keegan, Tim Kempton is an ex- Suns player and he did actually interview for the job 2 years ago but I understand that was more professional courtesy, he's got little to no chance at this

Westphal isn't very well liked here in this town, so he's out.

Barkley couldn't Coach his was out of a paper bag.

Majerle, too distracting...I mean the women are to distracting to him...he is an incredible flirt, just ask Nikki or Lisa or Ashley Rolling Eyes

I'd like professional experience but it doesn't have to be in the W.....
Anyone know what Chuck Daly is up to? Very Happy

Chuck Daly is involved with Dan Gilbert and the Cavs in an un-official capacity. He was offered the job as President/GM before Larry Brown's name ever came up but immediately turned it down because it wasn't a work from home job. Doubt he could coach the Merc from his living room couch. Wink

I havent followed Michelle Timms' career after the WNBA, but does she have any coaching experience outside of the Mercury? It's only fitting that someone already there got it. And she knows the players and how they work. The last thing the Mercury need is to bring in some guy with no experience coaching women, aka Bibby.

Okay, thanks. I'm beginning to think that Timms would be more effective as an assistant to get some years under her belt...

If you google "Westphal Limbaugh," you'll find more. The thing I cited was from 1996, but a more recent connection was two years ago when Westphal paid homage to Limbaugh on the 15th anniversary of his radio show.

http://wizardsandwars.com/pc_game_forums/viewtopic.php?t=498

A link there to Limbaugh's website allows you to hear Westphal tell him, "You're well on the way to straightening out the country."

Okay, as I was contemplating the Monarchs' impending match-up with Houston, I thought that with Dawn Staley at the helm, they don't even need Van Chancellor.

So the next thought is: What about Staley for head coach at Phoenix?

I know she has very strong ties to Philly, but if she's thinking about retiring from the W, this could be a good move.
