so, there's this commercial on tv now - may be national, may be just east coast - that simply shows a real simon legree-type character extolling the virtues of being a workaholic employee who has sacrificed vacation time for the good of the company and the company's profits. it ends with a web address: iwantmyvacation.com. the first few times you may not notice that, in the lower left corner of the screen, the commercial is presented by universal orlando. it's a pretty slick presentation. but curiosity got the best of me, and i went to the website, where there's an interesting "bash the boss" game. you punch mr. boss guy and, on the strength of your punch, he flies down the hall.

I have never understood people who pass up their vacation time. Americans already get less time off than workers in any other industrialized nation, why compound it by not even using what you get?

They're a bunch of kiss-ups, that want to make their peers look bad for taking a day off.

now, now, smoovie. some of them really just have an illness - they have an unnatural compulsion to work (or the fear of facing the reality that they don't have real lives outside of the job), hence the term workaholic. may not be driven at all by ambition or the desire to show off their colleagues.

i gotta get back to work.

We should all get six week holidays every year. I'd even endorse a four day working week. We need more time off work.

A lot of industry in the US is going to the "Four Ten Hour Days" thing. It works well - better productivity too. Most employees don't mind an extra couple hours a day to get a three day weekend. I know I don't!

i'm with you, keegan, to both - a six-week vacation and a four-day work week. our world has accelerated, parents don't have time with their kids anymore, we generally don't have time for both chores and leisure on the weekend (anyone here remember when you did your chores and errands on saturday, then relaxed on sunday with family and friends?).

there's an email making the rounds called something like "going to work," contains two quick videos. if you get it, watch it. it's hilarious.

i once had the ideal four-day work week briefly: wednesday and weekends off. it was so perfect - errands and chores on wednesdays, then saturday and sunday completely free and clear. (sigh!) the added benefit was that, no matter how bad things could get at work, i knew i only had to deal with it for two days in a row before i got a break. Very Happy

Speaking of which... Arrow

Quote:
PARIS - The long vacations and 35-hour workweeks French workers enjoy could be falling by the wayside. After a vitriolic debate, lawmakers approved a bill on Wednesday that would allow employees to work more.

The Socialists had instigated the 35-hour workweek — down from 39 hours— as a means of reducing soaring unemployment. The idea was that companies would hire more employees to compensate. But France still has an unemployment rate of nearly 10 percent.

Shocked

I know a frequent stereotype is that of 'Lazy Americans', yet if hardly any vacation is taken, it doesn't make any sense. But I guess no steretypes make much sense Idea
