Hopefully the reigning World Champions aren't peaking too early, because that was an amazingly crisp first half -- 64 percent shooting, a 16-10 rebound advantage, etc. Just steamrolled a very good China team. So long as they get LJ to the arena on time, who needs a summer's worth of training?

Yea, China looks overmatched here. The Opals are scoring at will.

I'd have to say the Opals depth is a bit suspect. The end of the bench is giving points away.

I guess I was right about a Jekabsone playing at F.I.U. but might be wrong about close relation to the Latvian star by that name.

Does anyone know if that is a common name in Latvia?

Can someone tell me what was blacked out on the the Opal unitards?

And LJ, babe...its only a warmup game...you dont have to scream the f-word as loud as you possibly can just because you missed an "and one" Laughing

On the other hand, having two of the world's top half-dozen players on the roster is a good starting point. And for the most part Maher kept his regulars -- who are very good in their own right, possibly medal-worthy -- out there against Australia's deep reserves. Tomorrow's match against Mali might provide a fairer comparison for pool play, at least...

In contrast with last night's debut by Russia, this was an excellent result for the Opals. Batkovic's return makes them more dangerous offensively than in 2006 and Harrower is still quite capable of directing. The Chinese shouldn't be too discouraged, although they'll need to make sure to finish at least third in pool play to avoid facing Australia in the quarters. They can hang with anyone else in Group A...

Don't disagree with you at all. I was thinking ahead for when they potentially meet USA. LJ and Batgirl will need to avoid foul trouble.

Just been to FIU athletic website. In bios for each Jekabsone sister, only the other is mentioned as sibling.

We owed China one after their recent defeat of us, so I'm glad we got them today Smile

Our depth is definitely suspect though - I couldn't argue with LJFan on that point, and that's exactly the reason why I think those claiming any gold medal favouritism for the Opals need to reassess their opinions.
The bench can hold its own against the weaker teams but when you consider that someone like Summerton, who plays decent minutes off the bench, can't hold a spot on a WNBA roster you have to wonder how we're going to compete with the USA over the full 40 minutes.

Wondered about that, as well. They also went without names on their backs; perhaps waiting to unveil new catsuits next week?

That was the Australian Defence Force.
I guess they were just trying to avoid displaying their recruiting phone number, so they wouldn't have to endure countless calls right around dinner time from Chinese telemarketers trying to get them to switch telephone companies.

I went on to channel surfing and it says Russia vs. USA at 3 AM EST. Was that the game?

Did I miss the USA game even though there is no mention of it already happening on the FIBA site? Is this an error on channel surfing's part or is it really over?

It should only have tipped off about 10 minutes ago.

Nothing! I thought it was coming up now since the two people in front of laptops is normally what we see before a game, but they're showing racing..

31-18 USA after the first. Taurasi had 7, Parker had 6 and Bird had 5 to pace the Americans.

Sadly no, I'm keeping track with official live stats.
