Several years ago (obviously) the Celtics made waves by drafting an eligible Larry Bird, who then returned to Indiana State to complete his eligibility. The Celtics of course signed him after that, and the rest is history.

Which brings us to Monique Curry, Polk, Cappie, and maybe Seimone Augustus or anyone else "draft eligible". Can a team burn a draft choice on one of these players, and then have until the next year's draft to sign them, like in the NBA?

It creates an interesting possibility, doesn't it?

Theoretically, if the player turns 22 during this calendar year they could be drafted. Realistically, that's not very likely. By that same interpretation of the CBA, Kendra Wecker and Sandora Irvin could have been drafted last year.

A player with remaining eligibility must renounce the remaining year(s) to be eligible for the draft. Therefore, the Bird rule does not apply.
