Lisa Etienne, one of the three players Rene Portland dismissed in the aftermath of a March 20th NCAA Tournament loss to Liberty U on Palm Sunday, has found a home with Coach Jen Rizzotti and the Hartford Hawks.
Sophomore guard Jennifer Harris transferred to James Madison Universtiy to continue her education in medicine. Harris was a USA Top 40, McDonald's and Kodak Academic All American who would have been PSU's leading returning scorer.
The third player dismissed, freshman guard Amber Bland, has quit the team and is weighing options for her future at home with her family in Texas. Bland was the Lions best defensive player and some say had the brightest future of all. Portland was said to have kicked her off the team with the others March 20, but then Portland changed Bland's status to 'in limbo' and refused to grant her release.
Penn State has just nine players under scholarship for next season. Five are freshmen.
Rumors persist on the Boneyard and ESPN Top 25 Womens Board [the same rumors have been purged from the Penn Live board] that PSU coach Rene Portland will be granted a leave of absence for the 2005-06 season, leaving the inexperienced and undermanned team in the hands of longtime assistant coach Annie Troyan.
