Maloofs moving their franchises to Las Vegas?

The Sun may have opened the door for basketball in casinos.

Werent people skeptical of Connecticut because it had a casino. This completely whips that argument out. I hope they stay in Sacramento.

If they have sports betting in casinos it could be a problem

you always here that, and I don't understand why? What is the problem if people bet on games? And are we really to believe that if it isn't in a casino, people aren't betting on games?

...the Maloofs are simply playing a card game with the city of Sacramento...it's called blackmail. Rolling Eyes

No doubt Sacramento needs a new arena...the concourse of Arco is way too small. The Maloofs will be business men first, & if a new arena is built , I don't put it past them to move the Monarch's/Kings out.
Sacramento better wake up. I can't imagine being left with just the River Cats!

True, but the Kings definitely wont move to Vegas before the 2007 All Star Game, so that gives the Maloofs at least 2 years of bargaining... And I think Sacramento will eventually buckle. Besides, if Gov. Arnold wants to be re-elected, he knows he better not let the Kings move Idea

I have my May '06 move narrowed down to Phoenix and Vegas. A WNBA franchise in Vegas would do nothing to make my decision any more easy. Rolling Eyes

You wouldn't need to pay for Direct TV either... Idea the ESPN Zone at the New York New York plays all WNBA games, even on the big screens, WITH audio. And then there's a 2nd floor of the same, all on 42" flat screens over a bar.

I believe the rule is if you casino offers sports betting then it is illegal and against NBA rules.

Hey PennyTfan,
Phoenix has better schools, access to healthcare and Penny and Diana, but Vegas rocks if you like the casino shows...of course it's just 5 hr drive or a 45 minute flight from phoenix

Well if my teams move, I too will move. Most likely it will have to be where the summers aren't 100 degees or more everyday!
So that rules out Vegas & Phoenix. Maybe Seattle, or the Bay area, should they get a WNBA team down the road.

l'll always be a Monarch fan....hope they stay!

Yes, but Stern is unwilling to move a team there until all casinos cease sports betting on NBA games... That means not just the Palms... which is unlikely to happen Confused

Because they're the owners of the Kings, the Maloof's Palms casino in LV has a sportsbook but they don't take bets on pro basketball. If you want to bet on NBA/WNBA you have to go to the casino across the street. Also for those who haven't been to The Palms, it's a little ways from the strip but they attract a very young hip crowd because they have two hot clubs (Ghost bar, Rain), lots of good concerts and they're always doing sponsored special events there. IMO it would make a good venue for a WNBA team.

Phoenix has an overwhelming advantage over Vegas at the moment.

For me, the advantage Phoenix has is (in no particular order)......
1. I've lived there and am familiar with the surroundings
2. Job availability for my chosen profession
3. Wage vs. cost of living ratio is fantastic (well, as fantastic as it can be.)
4. The Mercury
5. My favorite football team.....the Cardinals
6. 2 NASCAR races per year
7. The best Mongolian Bar-B-Que restaurant I've ever eaten at. (can't remember the name but it's in the Scottsdale Pavillions Mall)
8. The best Mexican food in the USA
9. The Brigade!! (brownie points.....no?)

Vegas has.......

1. Intrigue
2. A really good cost of living (last time I checked)
3. Some of the best people watching on this earth (aside from maybe the beaches in Brazil Very Happy )

that's about it.

It really boils down to where I can get a better job at the time I am ready to go but I pretty much already know where that will be.

I'm a corporate travel agent.

Right now, Phoenix has Carlson Wagonlit that is always hiring and has a large number of accounts, American Express Travel which also has good accounts....not necessarily hiring all the time but I'm meeting a good contact on Thursday to help get in the door if need be, and my current company WorldTravel Partners, is starting to increase it's presence in the Phoenix area and has been hiring like crazy for the last 18 months with no end in sight as far as the hirings. The advantage I have with WTP is that I'd be transfering so I could retain my seniority (to protect a little against, God forbid, layoffs), and maintain my benefits package which includes the extra week of vacation that I just earned with my 5th anniversary this year.

I just re-read what you said about Phoenix having Penny and Diana and got a chuckle. I passed on comment because Cam already thinks I'm a Carlos Boozer stalker.....I'd hate for him to add WNBA players to the list of people I allegedly stalk. Laughing

Maybe I'll go to Hershey PA. right before my move and bring y'all something straight from the factory?

I'm really not into stalking people. Cam just THINKS I am. Laughing (and yes Cam, I do know that you were kidding about that. Smile )

Actually, I don't watch much NBA ball. I follow boxscores a bit but I can't say that I've watched more than about 3 or 4 games from start to finish in any season since I left Seattle back in '94.

yes, if I was a stalker, I could definately do worse than those 2. Wink

and to complete the whole circle......Boozer thinks quite highly of Penny. She was his favorite Rockers' player.
