Just got back--it was scary! 80% of the audience even clapped at the end of the movie.

I just got back from seeing it too.
Enjoyed it a lot, except (highlight to read spoiler)...
It *really* shat me that the son lived. Bloody Hollywood...
(end of whinge)

Some outstanding special effects though, and they did the tense parts well. A fun ride for sure.

great effects. i thought the creatures were very close to the original movie, from what i remember. i usually don't care much for remakes, but this one rocked pretty good.

This movie sucked big time. I was so mad I was about to get up and leave the theater before it even ended. I expected a great action film instead I got a disney movie. UGHHHHH!!!!

I thought the story-telling was very well put together except for those growing thingys. Whatever were they for? There were a lot of connectors and stringers. For instance, the fact that Ray, a dockworker, worked inside a crane and manipulated it to pick up and put down containers, just like the tripods required a worker inside to make them work. The aliens playing with a wheel of a bicycle--sort of reminded me of "E.T." There were many instances like that throughout the movie.

I thought it was action packed--until Tim Robbins.

I give it mixed reviews . . . things like the special effects and cinematography were great. Pacing was good, very suspenseful. The horror elements weren't too gross. All that is good.

But I just thought the ending was totally lame.

Highlight for further, revealing detail:

They're tryin to tell us that these aliens have been studying earth for a million years, apparently including human biology because of all the bloody stuff, whatever that was about -- and somehow missed out on pathenogenic micro-organisms? That is just too much to swallow. It's like they made the movie, then just slapped on the narrated beginning and ending because they had to tie up the loose end somehow and not send everybody home totally bummed out. It just seemed so stupid to me!

sorry - as usual, i'm late to the party. i hope it's not too contradictory to say that i pretty much agree with all the comments. it was scary and entertaining, and at one point i realized my jaw had dropped and i needed to close my mouth! but i also agree with the spoiler comments and . . . (highlight more spoiler text below)

really wish it had been closer to the original story. loose ends, too quickly dispensed with at the end, the son surviving, dakota fanning (who is amazing) going into shock, then coming out quickly, etc., etc. and the tim robbins big, when he coulda just been a more ordinary guy trying to survive in that moment like the rest of them. but i was entertained, i was scared, and everyone (i think) applauded.
