Okay experts, 12x optical is equal to approximately what zoom on a regular 35 mm camera?

if you search those keywords in google, you'll see several references similar to this one: "12x optical zoom lens, which translates into 36-432mm, in 35mm parlance."

not that i'm an expert - i just know how to look for stuff . . . i'd check these sites, which i've used in the past, for more complete information:

the second one is my favorite because you can view actual sample shots from cameras you're shoppping and even do side-by-side comparisons. the differences (soft/sharp focus, warm/cool colors) are striking.
