Series of debates to ponder.....
PART 1....You are the GM of the WNBA Colorado Mogulettes. You love your team, (except the name), as you just lost in the WNBA Finals the prior year. A good mix of vets, youngsters, All-Stars and potentials. Unfortunately, to keep the team together, you have to max out the salary cap and can only have the minimum 11 players this coming year. There are 12 players currently under contract, of which 11 have been identified by staff to be the ones. In addition, you have draft picks #s 10, 17, 36.
Last year, you watched Boston's 3rd rounder, Sally Scrubbucket, blow out her knee in a preseason game and they were stuck with her, having to cut a good prospect.
In addition, 3 maybe 4 of your vets are going deep into European finals, and will be 7-10 days late for camp.
Q...Who and how many do you invite to camp?

I'm all for bringing in bodies. Even if they don't make the roster you can see if they're worth calling in the event of an injury later in the year, or signing the next year if there's an opening, or seeing what their strengths and weaknesses are in the event they sign with another team.

If Boston's GM had any sense, he would have cut Scrubbucket during training camp when she was arrested for driving under the influence, illegal posession of a firearm, and resisting arrest.

Shocked

Easy,

1) how many of those are guaranteed contracts?

2) buyout a contract - allow the player to join another organization for more playing time.

3) trade a player to a team that needs to meet the minimum salary cap requirement

4) no good players are available in this year's draft.... I trade all of those 3 picks, for 2nd round pick for next year (towards non-playoff team) to allow them get more picks.

if no trade is done, use the draft picks as practice players for your veterans --- release them early, to give them a chance for other teams to pick them up.

if a player gets hurt, you can use the injury exception - however, that goes into next year's salary cap.

Is Detroit eligible for the Sparks Cap?

The WNBA has no injury exception. Only when less than 10 players are available.
If you are happy with the existing 11 players, how can you risk bringing Nancy Notalent to camp. They won't make the team, and if they are hurt, last years #12 gets cut....cap casualty.

SFO, this is where you normally would call SS of the MFO and make a trade... Smile

Since he isn't around, see what else you can get from DH and SASS.

If you are a WNBA junkie, the scenario that I wrote is quite a quandry, (whoa..big word). Many of you throw out such incredible crap about your GMs and what they should do. YOU don't have any responsibility. Here is a real decision your GM must make.
Do you take the risk?

It is hard to evaluate without knowing the specific salaries. How many max players are there? How many players are still in their rookie deails (under the current CBA)?

You missed the point. The coaching staff already has their 11 players that they want returning from last year. That eats up all cap room. Sheri Stiff is the odd player out... in their opinion. You have 3 draft picks and 3-4 players showing up late for camp. What is your decision on invitees?

No guaranteed contracts for the draftees shouldn't be a problem. Bring in the players at those positions where you will have late arrivals.

Are all 11 players under guaranteed contracts in your scenario, or are they just the 11 decided upon players?

So your vote is to bring in all 3 draft picks that your coaches don't want, and you are willing to take the risk of injury to them at the expense of the 11 returning?

Remember. If a rookie is injured, their contract is guaranteed until they are healthy.

Trade all of your draft picks for next years picks (to teams willing to do so)

Hire players* for ten day contracts to have enough bodies until players return from overseas.

*Players who have W experience but are having trouble making a roster.

No such thing as 10 day until July 3. Training camp contract or nothing.

Oh well.

How about unpaid "interns"?

Some teams use men to play against. I do not. Guys trying to one the women leads to injuries.....i.e...Innis

Yes. The risk is minimal, and at most it's one player (the 11th player, deep on the bench). Since you're only planning on 11 anyway, additional injuries would make you eligible for the injury exception since it would put you under 10 players.

to meet this requirement - a trade has to be done.... only 11 will fit the cap....

this was connecticut situation a few years ago ---- the deal with why Sales couldn't earn the max (when she was holding out)

Conn had $72,000 left (rest of contracts were guaranteed)

Veteran minimum was $42,000
Rookie Salary was $30,000

Thats all they could do

even though they had two veterans that were good for the team at $42,000 each - they couldnt keep both veterans, as they would been over the camp.... so they cut one of the veterans, and kept the rookie.

Trade has to be done -- even the "rights to a player" I would trade the player to get the rights of certain people, maybe like Laura Macchi who wouldnt count against the cap.

Draft Picks don't count against the cap until the regular season starts!

What you are saying pilight, is that you would risk a former #12, who is the 11th player, who the coaches like, to bring in #36 to camp.
