A co-worker just told me he saw this on one of the news stations.
Just found this: http://www.myfoxhouston.com/myfox/pages/Sports/Detail?contentId=1202659&version=1&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=6.1.1

Alexander wants to sell the Comets franchise so that he and his staff can focus on their core company, the NBA Houston Rockets.
Tad Brown, a senior vice-president with the Rockets, told FOX 26 that "the Comets right now are up for sale."
Brown says the intention is to "make sure the franchise is located here in Houston."
Brown says the change to separate ownership is happening all over, and cited Chicago, Washington and Charlotte.
"Individual ownership is something that can really allow resources to be focused exclusively on the women's game," said Brown.
Van Chancellor is the only head coach the Comets have ever had, and says he's saddened by the news that Alexander has put the franchise on the market.
"I don't think it's the end of the Comets," said Chancellor. "I hate to lose the ownership of Leslie Alexander...but, I'm hoping we can continue to build this team and this franchise."
Tad Brown tells FOX 26 there's no timeline in place for the sale of the Comets, and no deadline for selling the team. |

Well the good thing is I don't think he'll fold the team if an owner doesn't come along. But this could be a good thing that maybe somebody with a passion for the Comets will buy the team and get more fans in the arena.

One thing to remember, kids...if Alexander doesn't own the Comets....they don't get to play in his big arena. Think about alternative venues...and would Comets fans drive there...like Hofheinz Pavillion...which would be perfect, in my opinion...great size for the crowd coming now.
If they try to keep a deal to play at Toyota Center...he would just charge them rent out the ying. No, Alexander does not "own" the building...but, I am not so naive to think he won't have a say on that rental contract.
This is scary and exciting, all at the same time.

To me it kinda came out of left field but then again I don't know much about Houston...but by the sounds of it doesn't sound like you could have you team ripped away from you. So good luck to whatever happens and GO COMETS!

I bet if everyone on here donated some money we all could be minority investors in the team and have one or two people be the majority.

Don't you mean STAY Comets!?
It doesn't sound like the team is in danger of folding or re-locating. This may work out well - I hope so.

I know this article was written almost ten years ago but it still hold true.
Houston is crawling with millionaires:
http://www.chron.com/content/chronicle/metropolitan/97/03/23/houstonwealth.2-0.html
Quote: |
According to one estimate, the number of millionaires in Houston has more than doubled in the past two years. There are about 81,000 millionaires in the city, according to Payment Systems Inc., a research firm that monitors wealth. |
I'm sure somebody or several people, hopefully, will step up.

Separating from NBA owners is generally good......but this could be really good. |
It is good if the NBA owner isn't committed to the WNBA team and if private investment can be found. But if no private investment can be found, the team will contract or be relocated...possibly to a new town with a much smaller media market.

This NBA owner certainly isn't committed to the W.
If there's that much trouble finding people to buy in, the league is in trouble anyway.
