I'm going to say this and probably get blasted. But here it goes. I don't have this great love for the Australian team that many here have. I'm American through and through. The Opals took care of their business. So congrats to them. I know many are happy that the arrogant Americans did not win. They teach them not to acknowlegde the crowd. Isn't it a joy to see LJ, Penny and others get their first gold. Get for real. |
Well let em blast away.
I'm with you on this |
So am I.

Generally, it is true. However, there are times when the officiating can tip the balance. In this case, the Americans were at a disadvantage by not being able to see everything the Russians had. But, since the Russians have often do that, USA should have expected that they might see thing that that had not scouted.

Probably being an ugly American, but I just don't care about the World Championships. If the US doesn't win the Olympics then I will be upset.
That said if there are WCs, and if the US is trying to win and not using it as a way to develop young players like I wanted them to, then I want them to win. I don't understand being happy that someone else did AT ALL.

Sorry, I can't picture the Americans mixing it up and going crazy like the Aussies. They would've been all business-like and would've looked at the whole party as if we were from another planet. They only wish they were as cool as the Aussies. |
I guess that when the Americans won their first world championship like Australia just did they went nuts like the Aussies did, but now it's business for our players because so much is expected of them, that's just fact.
Sorry they wern't their usual charmimg selves, but it's hard work to stay on top of the heap!

Pumatty, that was the point I was making. I'm not happy for anyone else to win. Taj was saying, it was touching to see the Aussie when their first gold. To whom? I guess it would been just as touching if they had beat the Americans.

Maybe. OTOH, the expected demeanor of women in 1953 was significantly different than it is now, so maybe not.

No it would not have been as touching, it would have been maddening, but since the Americans weren't playing what were we to do? Cheer for both teams to lose?
It was touching, at least to me, to see a team, any team, break through from underdog to top dog after years of hard work and win the gold!

Exactly! When there's a tournament and my favorite team is eliminated, I pick the best of the rest and enjoy the rest of the series. I can't imagine sitting around sulking and glowering. Life's too short.
I hate it that the US lost, it was awful. But given that they did, I'm really glad the Australians won.

I got you, caune and waterloosunset. I probably would have been feeling it more if some of those players were on my home team. I actually taped the game but only watched half-way because it really wasn't competitive.

What is the reasoning for not acknowledging the crowd? Do you mean they are taught not to acknowledge the fans in general, or just in certain situations?
