Sivka might be joining Chicago this summer...or not:

One major obstacle stands between Sivka and the WNBA this season: FIBA Women’s Eurobasket.
Beyond the salary cap and different style of play, international commitments are typically the main reason European players decline to participate in the WNBA — and Eurobasket is at the heart of this conflict. Taking place every two years, the tournament represents the pinnacle of competition in Europe. |
|
The Chicago Tribune has a paywall.
I was hoping to read if this would affect the other European players in the first round, like the #2 pick and the #5 pick.

Valkyries 'confident' in their international-flavored expansion strategy, GM says. But the players have to be both good enough to play and also want to come over every year. Leonie Fiebich passed the first test (how did an 6'4" German end up as a shooting guard?) and they must be looking for more like her. How many are out there that good and it remains to be seen if Fiebich passes the second test.

“Chicago Sky power forward Angel Reese on April 11 paid $1.275 million for a newly built, four-bedroom, 3,600-square-foot house in southwest suburban Lemont,” Goldsborough wrote.
Reese purchased the residence via a company.
“In Lemont, Reese purchased the house through a recently formed limited liability company,” Goldsborough wrote. “Her new house has 3 ½ bathrooms, a first-floor study, a media room, a three-car garage and a lookout basement, all on a 0.41-acre property.
“The house had been on the market since January 2024, when it first was listed for $1.325 million. Its asking price later was reduced to $1.275 million.”
Reese makes about $81,000 per year in the WNBA. However, she has other business ventures, like her podcast. The former LSU standout has partnered with McDonald’s.
Due to her successes on and off the court, Reese has been able to pay off her mother’s house as well. |

According to the Sky site, Friday's pre-season game against the Brazil National Team will be streamed on League Pass and broadcast on ION.

All preseason games will be televised or streamed this year. This is the first time that’s happened that I can remember.

Always rooting for Bertsch because she was a good story, being undrafted from a mid major college (UC Davis). Have to wonder if things would have gone better if she hadn't gotten injured 3 games into the season after winning the starting 4 position for the Sky over Alanna Smith. Haven't ever seen her look as good as she did starting out. But players like her should have a much better chance when 3 teams are added. Although that will be 36 roster positions while these teams are cutting 60+ players.

On the one hand, it's great to see players like Morgan Bertsch get more opportunities thanks to expansion. On the other, it's worrisome that players like Morgan Bertsch, who have never found a home on a roster, could be significant pieces on expansion teams.
I'd love it if she and others all show out. I'm worried they will not be able to score.

I was disappointed that Bertch was cut again. That injury last year really set her back. Saw the writing on the wall, however, when she was a DNP on Saturday (along with the other cuts).
I really wish that pre-season lasted longer because I think there is too much pressure for players to make an immediate splash. Of course, we don't see team dynamics except at games, and this year our opportunity to see some of that is more widespread than in the past.
It would also be great if the W had the equivalent of a G League so those players who don't make the cut can still have a chance to train and get some income (or however that works in the NBA).

Might be nice, but the G-league loses millions of dollars, and right now the players are trying to get as many bucks for themselves in this next CBA as they can without using a gun.

IMO, the preseason games should be closed scrimmages so the team doesn't have to focus on pleasing the fans and the coaches can focus on evaluating certain players. I looked forward to seeing the games but I saw a lot of stressed out rookies. Combine that with social media armchair coaches... I don't envy these rookies.

It's part of it, though, and it startts young.
Club tryouts are a couple hours with tons of kids, and the pressure is real.
In high school, even our JV scrimmages put pressure on girls because a rotation has been more or less determined in practice, and there's a chance to show the coaches something against other teams.
But then again, if the girl ahead of you in the rotation is working you over every day in practice, having a nice game against another team isn't going to change the equation much.
I tell parents all the time -- and they never can hear me -- that if you want to understand my starters and substitution patterns, come to practice every day. That's where most of the time is spent, and that's where you learn about your players.

Is it too early in the season to worry about W-L records? |

I think it is, just as I also think it's too early to speculate ROY, COY, etc. with such a small sample.
From Wikipedia about the Sky's championship season:
Quote: |
The Sky started the season with two wins but followed with a seven-game losing streak through mid-June. However, they went on a seven-game winning streak that included back-to-back wins over eventual top seed Connecticut. They entered the mid-season Olympic break with a 10–10 record. After the break, they recorded a 4–3 record in August, including back-to-back road wins in Seattle. In September, they began with a road loss and closed out the season with a four game home-stand that they split 2–2, finishing the season 16–16.
...They were only the third team to reach the finals with a record of .500 or below, and the lowest seed to do so since the new playoff format was introduced in 2016. |
