Will there be enough time between leagues (W and Unrivaled) for players to rest, recoup and prepare for the next league?

Have you already forgotten what it was like for those players who go overseas, some playing past the start of the WNBA season? By comparison, this is like going to a resort for a couple of months with some exercise.

For those WNBA players who didn’t make it into Unrivaled, I’ve heard of a few going to China and a couple going to Australia, but I haven’t heard much about Europe. It seems like between prioritization and Unrivaled, European basketball has really taken a hit. It almost seems like they have to rely on their own homegrown talent, which isn’t nearly as good.

While the exact impact on injury stats can be difficult to definitively measure due to limited data on overseas injuries and variations in reporting across leagues.Playing overseas can potentially increase the risk of injury for WNBA players, as it often involves a compressed playing schedule, different playing styles, travel fatigue, and sometimes less stringent medical care compared to the WNBA, which can lead to higher injury rates when they return to play in the US
per Google

This is where I am coming from with that question. They may play through but it most likely has an effect. Some years ago, there was a discussion on whether playing overseas was detrimental to the quality of the WNBA product.

Three days in advance of the first game the league has announced rules.

https://www.espn.com/wnba/story/_/id/43411913/unrivaled-rules-encourage-fast-playground-style

Some highlights:

1) 7 minute quarters (1-3) plus a final quarter that is based on score.

2) 6 fouls to be disqualified. Since the games are roughly 28 minutes this would be 8-9 fouls for 40 minutes.

3) It appears that all fouls will result in free throws, although I'm not sure if this just wasn't addressed in the article. Only 1 FT will be shot but the value of the FT will be 1 (for technicals or after a made basket), 3 (for fouls on a 3 point shot) or 2 (for all others)

4) The shot clock will be 18 seconds (no mention about whether that will be the same after an offensive rebound)

I have thought that fouls should award points automatically without free throws to speed up the game and force substitutions. Cutting the number of free throws in half does that to a lesser extent.

18 second shot clock is going to make things even worse for centers like Dolson and Griner. The pace is not going to be post friendly.

Not sure about that 4th quarter "play to a score" rule. They could do other things like make foul shots worth 3 or 4 points in the 4th quarter to discourage late game fouling.

I think it’s hard to replace the drama that comes with free throw shooting in a close game. Even automatic shooters can miss under the pressure.

It's going to be interesting to see how this works. It's going to be hard to prevent transition, as if one player goes to the hoop and misses, on a short court it will be 2-on-1 or 3-on-2 right away.

Lots of running involved.

The teams with the motors should dominate. Laces, Owls, and Rose would be my early picks.

My guess is that BG will struggle. Stef’s saving grace would be trailing 3 balls that get kicked back to her.

Players like AT, Jackie, Phee, and Skylar with their crazy strong motors should excel. Players such as Lexie, Kate, and AB who have played with Caitlin should at minimum have less of a shock effect with the pace. Chelsea should be able to deliver some masterful assists.

I’m very excited!

Marina Mabrey out 2-4 weeks with a calf injury.

I don't know how much I will actually watch, but I programmed YouTubeTV to record the games. There are also pre- and post-game shows, along with something called Unlocked

1)The 7 minute quarters are supposed to have a running clock. Not clear if that means truly running, even during out-of-bounds and free throws.

2)I can't find any information about team fouls and bonus/penalty. Maybe that's not utilized?

3)I don't think all fouls will result in free throws, but I can't find any evidence either way. A Tech is worth one free throw, so I doubt a standard contact foul would result in a shot.

4)I also can't find any information about front-court shot clock resets. A full 18 seems improbable. 8 seconds would be awfully short; I hope it is 10 seconds.

- Can't find any info about timeouts and substitutions either. I guess I'm more curious about this stuff than the average fan. Oh well, I guess I'll learn when I watch the games.

I am surprised that Wayfair arena that they built just for these Unrivaled games seats less than 1,000 spectators. That really puts all their eggs into the television audience basket.

ESPN's WNBA page is covered with this league, which is not the WNBA. Really hope people quit lumping these things together.

Natisha Hiedeman has signed as a relief player for Mabry.

Maybe only because I am used to them being there, but I think it takes something from viewing the game when you don't see fans. I would have put them on the side where the cameras are pointed.

The big question for me is whether they will shorten these games. The current rules look like the games will take 1:20 or so. Is that okay with TNT?

The next big question is what are the ratings and will they improve/decline over time.

I found the first two games difficult to watch. It was too frenetic with no time to assess what was happening. I will watch when I can but this is not appointment TV>

Don’t worry so much about TNT. They’ll be okay.

The only difficult part for me is my favorite team isn’t winning, but at least I’m not a fan of the Phantoms.

Football is winding down, and when that’s done, what else is there? I think that’s another part of their planning brilliance. Friday and Monday are the slowest days for college women’s basketball. Ask me how I know.

Production should get better with time. Play should improve. There wasn’t much of a preseason. Just players mostly unfamiliar with each other thrown together with a new coach. Give them time.

Wonder how the team/league feel about Boston being in the BigTen studio today.

Has anyone looked at the ticket prices?

Cheapest for tomorrow's games is $160.00. I guess they are looking to get the tourist $$ and not the local, repeat business. I know there are very few seats available (increasing demand), so there shouldn't be a bad seat, but...wow!

Saw parts of three games.

*Much more about the players than the team or the game, which is good for that segment of WNBA fans who are really interested in particular players.

*The fullcourt setup means that it's almost impossible to defend. It's hard enough in 3x3 halfcourt but spreading out the action means lots of one-on-ones and lots of pick-and-rolls that can't be defended due to no help.

*The announcing is cloyingly positive. Every player is great, on and off the court. I get that negativity has no place, but maybe talk a little more about the game. And the in-game interviews are just terrible -- there is zero substance, unless you count hitting softball questions out of the park with an Unrivaled bat counts for something.

*The team names are not growing on me. What is a liunar mist?

*There's not going to be much variation from game to game or during games. Go one-on-one or pick-and-roll. Shoot. Repeat.

I'll watch and I'm hoping it gets better for me, but right now it just looks like a showcase for individual players, and their skills, not team basketball. That will work for some people, which is great.

It’s “Lunar Owls”.

When the one-on-one tournament starts, will you be taking time to say it’s a showcase of individual talents and not team ball?

I would think it would be great for people who are very concerned with the overall "talent level" of the players. This is the highest average talent level in history.

Same. It seems like the league powers that be had a note to "be creative!" when going about choosing names. But creative can make it harder to stick in someone's head. I assume Vinyl comes from the old records of 40 years ago which have had a niche comeback.
