She was a bonafide potential superstar. Attention for the league was paramount. They couldn't have her languishing on an expansion team. They needed her somewhere visible and potentially competitive. |
An beyond that, the current owners were never going to approve a system that put Parker on an expansion team instead of one of the existing teams. They weren't going to give her away to the new kid on the block.

That's conspiracy-level thinking. Whatever the reason for giving Atlanta the #4 pick instead of a chance at #1 in the lottery, I guarantee it wasn't "keep them from getting Parker." It was probably something about fairness to the existing teams.
You could just as easily argue the opposite- the league has an interest in expansion teams being successful.
It will be interesting to see what they do this time.

It didn't prevent the Dream from being successful. They made the playoffs in their second season and reached the finals in their third. They were far more successful than the team that actually got Parker over the following 6-7 seasons.

I think they whiffed across the board;
- the name is meh
- the logo is awful
- the color scheme makes little sense
- the reveal video looks fan made
I’m shocked. It’s like they slapped this together last week and rushed it all out. |
You can go to the first post in this thread and edit in the name of the team, unless you’re so disappointed that you want a new thread to be started. |
You do you.

I would expect Golden State to get the fifth pick, after the lottery. There's some historical precedence for this, but mainly the owners of teams that didn't make the playoffs are going to want to get a good player. The expansion team will have to fend for itself -- and with Lacob's money and expiring contracts after 2025, the roster will be stacked with free agents.

Question: Is there anyway possible for a collegiate player to forego the draft and sign with the team of their choice? |

I don't believe so, unless they sue the league.
We'll see how the new CBA is structured, though -- that could change everything.

No. Well, essentially no. If you are drafted and then sit out a year, you can re-enter the draft rather than signing with the team that picked you. If you are drafted again, and then sit out another year, you'd become a free agent. But when I say 'sit out', that means other leagues as well, not just the WNBA. That's why this rule only tends to come up with players who are injured when they're picked.
You can't just say "don't pick me" and avoid the draft. That would rather defeat the whole point. |

To my verbal taste, the name Valkyries is kind of obscure and not at all mellifluous, but I don't really care. However, what sports team with a three syllable name has ever become dynastic or dominant other than the New England Patriots? |

So, a pretty low percentage. I suspect there are a lot more dominant teams that have had two syllable names. Of course, suspicions aren't facts.
Valkyries = "choosers of the dead"—females who guide the souls of dead warriors to Valhalla? EEEEEK!!!
On the other hand, there is Wagner's inspiring (?) Ride of the Valkyries via Francis Ford Coppola:

I mentioned the same thing jokingly on Twitter, but I imagine the base design and colourway of the Sabrina 2s has probably been in place a lot longer than the week that we've known the Valkyries' logo and colour scheme. |

Not likely since they will probably have the 5th overall pick.
