This is not surprising, but it is interesting the number of older, but not old, coaches that are retiring.

My guess is although they won’t say it publicly the transfer portal and NIL has changed basketball and not in a positive way.
Teachers are also leaving in large numbers as well because of how education has changed and for coaches it’s the same. They no longer can just coach. Kids have no loyalty to a program anymore and that would get frustrating and read for a coach who spends time and money to recruit A player only to see them leave in a year or two. Iowa was one of the few schools though that had few transverse leaving the program.
40 years is a long time to be a head coach and Bluder deserves to go off and have a wonderful retirement.
My guess is when Paige Bueckers graduates next year, Geno will also retire. He has spoken out against the transfer portal and NIL’s.

Of course coaches could also abandon the kids they recruited, and often did when it benefitted them -- so it's not like loyalty has been a big part of the college basketball scene. (Unless of course players are held to a higher standard than their older leaders ...)
But things have definitely changed. Recruiting for P4 programs (or P2 or however many are left) will be more focused on experienced college players who have proven themselves at that level rather than high school girls who are unproven.
That's just a shift, though -- the big earthquake is NIL. To compete, you have to have money to spend, and that money has to come from boosters. So now the coach must a) raise money from boosters; and b) negotiate within a budget with players who are looking for the best deal (exactly like coaches do).
And college coaching has never been much about Xs and Os. It's always been recruiting, recruiting and more recruiting. Now, however, that recruiting requires a bank account and a calculated allocation of resources.
The other unknown is what the landscape will look like in 2030. It well could be there will be two major conferences with a total of 32 teams that all spend NIL money like water. And below that will be everyone else, playing in a system much like the one we have now.
Or something completely different ...

One of the biggest factors I've seen in recruiting/transfers, that has been more prevalent with the transfer portal is the athletes (across all sports) being given unrealistic expectations of themselves and thinking they are being unfairly treated by their coach and then they are stuck in the transfer portal or go to a school that is below the level they were at and still unhappy then they try again. If parents/mentors/coaches gave these young men and women a realistic understanding of where they compare to the rest of the world I don't think you would see as many transfers and unhappy players.
