Over the past few weeks in particular I've heard so many people (particularly on different WBB/sports message boards) say they've never heard of the likes of Pearl Moore or even Lynette Woodard. I thought I might start a topic to highlight pioneers in women's basketball, important history, superstars of the past, etc. so that we can all learn more about the history of the women's game. I'll start by sharing these 3 things and look forward to seeing what others add.

1) Senda Berenson (born Senda Valvrojenski in 1868) and later known as Senda Berenson Abbott after she married is considered to be the "Mother of Women's Basketball." First woman inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. You can find lots of information about her online. There's also a biography--there may be other books that I'm not aware of--titled Senda Berenson: The Unlikely Founder of Women's Basketball.

2) I have a lot of favorites but Lynette Woodard is probably at the top of my list of all-time favorites since I got to meet her and get her autograph when she played at KU when I was in high school. Here she is giving her Hall of Fame speech back in '04. (Woodard was also inducted in '02 with the Globetrotters) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neiMkYvWgXw

3) From Sportswrap Vault here's footage of a profile former Old Dominion Monarch Nancy Lieberman back in 1980.

Across the Timeline did a series called "And One" focusing attention on stars who deserved their due: https://letter.acrossthetimeline.com/archive/

If "Let's Remember Some Guys" (for a gender-neutral/Geno Auriemma usage of "guys") is your kind of jam, I present to you the D-I record book as of 2023: http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/w_basketball_RB/2023/D1.pdf

While we're all familiar with Pat Summitt, her final book with Sally Jenkins also serves as a dive into the history of WBB in her era: https://www.penguinrandomhouseretail.com/book/?isbn=9780385347051

Nice interview from 2021 by HBCU Gameday with 5-time Olympian and hall of famer Teresa Edwards.
