Who would you drop to add Caitlin Clark to the actual Olympic team?

Nike is the official shoe of Team USA, and they also have a huge deal with Ionescu, so I’d be very surprised if it was her.

The one who all the college players were running circles around making her look like a fool for being on the floor. I think you can guess who this is.

That is a great "qualifying team" but considering C. Gray, Wilson and Griner aren't there I don't think that is close to the final Olympic team. I realize those players were in the pool but assume they didn't make the last twelve for other reasons like minor injuries than they are actual cuts from contention.

Clark has a lot of people to get through to make the final team. And I don't think all of those players above are guaranteed a spot.

I can't see Caitlin Clark on the team, or really, deserving to be on the team.

And unless Chelsea Gray, A'ja Wilson and Brittney Griner are somehow not in consideration, three of those 12 will not be going to Paris.

I think that we might take the opportunity to send Clark for the USA 3x3 Team - and partner her with Brink and some of the others in a youth movement -- but what do I know?

I don't think Caitlin has played on any 3x3 teams and the USA doesn't have a team in any of the the so she wouldn't be eligible to play on the team unless she plays in qualifying tournaments so she wouldn't be eligible to play.

Am I the only one who remembers the whole ordeal with Candace Parker not making the Olympic team in 2016? And the glaringly obvious reason that happened was to make room for a newly graduated generational player in Breanna Stewart.
Now if Parker can be left off the team to make room for Stewart, there are several players comparably less prominent in the current squad than Parker was back then to make room for the next generational talent graduating this year.
Going off the 3x3 discussion, both Plum and Young have experience in this format and could be moved to that squad, if that’s possible. That could be one solution. I know Atkins has been loyal and whatever, but let’s be honest, she’s not that special when it comes down to it. Sorry Mystics homers.
Also, not that I think she needs the extra incentive, but letting Clark know you’d save an Olympic spot for her if she were to enter the WNBA, might give her extra motivation for her to enter the draft this year.

There's no point guard on this roster

I have a feeling Clark will make the team in much the same way Rebecca Lobo made it in 1996. Eyeballs and exposure.

Clark is on the latest 14 player training camp roster.

It’s gonna happen.

Collier is in Turkey (as is Kahleah Copper), Thomas is in China. Probably some other people missing for similar reasons as well.

Clark being named to the team is good for women's basketball. It's not like she's going to play heavy minutes anyway (but I would love to see it). I still remember the first time DT, Birdy and Ruth Riley added to that 2004 team and it didn't matter because they won GOLD.

That is one heck of a squad ... plus Taurasi (who I still hope is in the final 12 just for the history and the LOLs of it. Heck if LJ can influence her way into the Opals then Dee can do the same for the US)

no particular order (kind of) the 17 players competing for 12 spots IMO

C. Gray/Plum/Clark
DT/Loyd/Ionescu/A. Gray/Atkins
Collier/Copper/J. Young/R. Howard
Stewart/Wilson/A. Thomas
Griner/Boston

You have the alumni factor (all the players who played in previous Olympics or Worlds)
Up and coming factors all the young player who are likely to be deep in the hunt for 28 as well
Directly have played for coach in the past (maybe Dawn is different from Geno but I count 3 from her college team)
Politics,
popularity,
brings diverse or import skill to team (shooting, defense, multi positional player, etc)
Currently plays with other team members built in chemistry

there are a lot of factors and I can't come up with a theory on what will actually happen. I have my opinions and my favorites but at this point who knows
all of the final cuts will be shocking to some degree and players will be screwed over or robbed and no matter who makes the final cut people will say X shouldn't be there and y should be

Iowa has made the NCAAW Final Four, so Clark won’t be attending this camp. Should that hurt her chances of making the team?

It might but there is probably one or two more before the final team is announced.

The Opels do not have the depth of quality players that the US has. LJ was still a valuable addition to the squad, which can not be said for DT. Making a team for history sake is a poor reason to give someone a roster spot. They can just keep putting her on the team until she dies. Even then they could still stuff her an sit her on the bench for historys sake. -

Me too. I don't watch the Olympics to see youngsters run circles around a 40 yr old has-been, no matter how good she was.
