Can I just say I'm so happy that Dave O'Brien is back at ESPN calling WBB agames and I hope he gets the FF back. I like Ryan Ruocco, but in the W. Not in college.
Prediction:
Iowa-88
Indiana-79

Just listening to the announcers, one would expect Iowa to be up by 25+. I look up and it's 6 point game.

And a momentary burst of honesty from Lobo regarding Clark (at 3.8 seconds of Q3)":
"She has gotten a couple of favorable whistles on the dribble penetration."
Of course if anyone should know about favorable treatment from officials, a Geno acolyte should.

WOW! Indiana was gifted that.
When we, the fans of WBB, say we deserve better officiting, this is the exact call we speak of. It was a blatant travel.

Czinano and Berger have missed easy (for them) shots. The mark of a winner is they get better under pressure.
Indiana looks great. I really enjoy watching them play. But as great a conference as the B1G is, how many FF teams have they produced lately? NCAA titles?

Yeah, I've been feeling this way throughout the season. So many times fouls are called with (very) minimal contact.

My complaint is that it seems inconsistent and arbitrary. Someone gets hammered with no call, and a few seconds later someone gets whistled for breathing on an opponent.
And some coaches (neither of these) take advantage of that by playing "hack and push everyone and often" defense trusting that they'll get away with more than they get called for.
It really distorts the game.

that game, my friends, is what basketball should be all about....toe to toe...trading basket for basket.....and then we get to watch a miracle shot in real time........
we don't watch a lot of basketball unless it involves our local team, but today we both watched and it was truly fun, fun, fun...
congrats to Indiana and Iowa for giving such a great performance....

True 'nuff, there were some uber-stinky calls in this game, and that went both ways. I always try and remember that 99% of the time, refs don't get the benefit of instant replay. And I really don't think reffing determined the outcome of this one.
That said, I'd call this one an Instant Classic. This game really was riveting, the entire way. Indiana didn't lose this one as much as Iowa just ripped it outta their hands with Clark's dazzling gamesmanship.
It was also awesome to see the crowd (including the 'pocket of red' ). Iowa certainly deserved this one, but I'd say Indiana also has proven they deserve their status among the Top 4. I hope there's a re-match in the B1G tourney....the fans deserve that!
I still can't picture how either of these teams might match up with teams like SC or Stanford....maybe we'll find out one of these days, sooner or later.

Reviewing the last play in slow motion, I think Clark walked.
She seemed to catch the ball in mid-air and come down on her right foot, which made that her pivot foot. She lifted her pivot foot and put it back down on the floor before she shot. Same conclusion if you think she caught the ball when her left foot was still on the ground, making that her pivot foot.
However, I would expect that to be called hardly ever. |
