So I'm watching a rerun of one of the first round volleyball games. The tournament started earlier today. There is no commentary to be heard, yet there is a commentator listed. I have no idea what to make of this.

Edit: 24 minutes in, the announcer makes an appearance. Maybe an earlier game ran late and the announcer was working games back to back?

She makes a good point.

And here is another good point.

“This place has zero business hosting another regional,” said Chadwell, who said zero effort was made to adjust as it became clear that the tournament couldn’t be played in a normal fashion.

“You find a way to get it done.”

The NCAA has retained the law firm of Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP (“KHF”) to conduct a comprehensive and thorough external review of gender equity issues in connection with the NCAA, focusing on NCAA championships.

...

At the request of the NCAA, that report is publicly available below.

NCAA to pay officials same in both basketball tournaments

https://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/story/_/id/32889830

Quote:
"The national office continues to prioritize gender equity and has taken steps to correct the disparity of pay for officials selected to work the Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Championships," the NCAA said in a statement. "All basketball officials, regardless of the gender of sport participants, will be receiving equal pay for championship games officiated in 2022 and beyond."

If the course was saturated then the decision was the right one but I suspect that it was the course that said no. The players could easily do a million dollars in damage just playing. Golf courses are living things.
Other than good publicity for the course I doubt the members benefit much moneywise from hosting the tournament. Their concern is for their course and to host a regional this is surely a fine championship course. The course had over 7 inches of rain over several days. When it rains that hard, and especially that long, the ground gets saturated, attested to by a pond being in one fairway.
They would have had to waive the rule about touching a ball in play or forcing the players to hit mud-covered balls. Mud balls act crazily and the tournament would be won by the luckiest teams not the best ones. The alternate is to allow lifting, cleaning and placing the ball and free lifts from spongy ground in the fairways but if all the fairways are saturated as it appears then players are forced to take "best relief" which may be no relief. That isn't golf. I've played in that sort of conditions. It's not even the same for everyone. It denies use of much of the advanced skills that separate good and great players.

Holding a tournament of that magnitude under those conditions would be like having the NCAAWBB regionals on courts with 5 degree slopes and 10.5' baskets and saying "It's fair, the conditions are the same for everyone"

NCAA women's basketball tournament budget has increased over $3 million just in the time frame since the gender equity report was released.

I wonder if that 3 mil covers hair styling teams like the football teams are getting?

Quote:
The hair styling teams are split into groups of about 18. Each team will have barbers, one braider and one loctician.

Does the NCAA really have anything to do with that? I thought the college football playoffs were conducted by someone else as the NCAA actually conducts a Division I football championship amongst the FCS programs, which this year was won by North Dakota State again. The FBS programs play in all the bowl games, which includes the football playoff games. Those are all conducted by other groups instead of the NCAA.

No same-city final fours.

Quote:
There won’t be a combined men’s and women’s Final Four in the near future, the Division I basketball committees decided Friday.

Then, at the bottom of the article, there was this little nugget.
Quote:
The men’s Final Four this year will be in New Orleans.

Really? Take too many key strokes to throw in where the women will be?? 😞😞

I was watching the men's Big Ten Tourney yesterday and saw a Buick commercial about how they wanted to get more women's sports on the air. I really wasn't paying attention until the end when whatever was being said finally penetrated my brain. It was about the women's hockey championships and one of the greatest goals you've never seen.

So today, I came across this. I don't know if there are more or not.

They re-ran that one today and Darren Rovell felt the burning urge to stick his oar in.

No clue who Darren Rovell is. I did get quite a chuckle out of Jacson Bevens response.

Here they are and a story about the ads.

Nancy Armour weighs in.

Quote:
Ratings for last year’s tournament skyrocketed, with the Baylor-UConn game in the Elite Eight drawing 1.7 million viewers alone.

This despite going head-to-head against the men’s tournament.

In early February, average viewership for women’s college basketball was up 46 percent over 2021. The women’s Big Ten tournament in Indianapolis set a record for attendance, and its TV ratings were up 76 percent.

No, that’s not a misprint. 76 percent.

But hey! The girls got a new logo and better swag so we’re all good, right?

Quote:
The broadcast rights for women’s basketball alone will be worth between $81 million and $112 million annually in 2025, based on an estimate by Ed Desser, an independent media expert hired by Kaplan. Currently, they’re thrown in with the rights to more than two dozen other sports, for which ESPN pays all of $34 million a year.

Quote:
And before the keyboard warrior misogynists start whatabouting the differences in revenues generated, give the women the same kind of support and promotion the men have had the past four-plus decades and we’ll talk. But the NCAA is so short-sighted, it never even considered it was leaving money on the table with women’s sports.

USA Today has a couple of articles that are for subscribers only, but you can get a free two month trial. I don't have a subscription. Can't decide if I want to do the trial or not. I spend too much time online as it is!!

What the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Tournaments Can Learn from Each Other

https://boardroom.tv/ncaa-mens-womens-march-madness/

Quote:
Should the men’s tournament try home sites for the first weekend? I’m not convinced — there’s just something about the neutral environments and the eight fan bases converging on one random city that gives the tournament a little extra magic. But here’s what can’t be denied: the atmospheres during the first weekend of the women’s tournament were electric. Way more so than most of the men’s games.
