Deja Winters (who I never heard of) is the Gopher superstar.

UConn's backdoor cuts absolutely killing the Gophers right now

That might explain ONO’s team-leading 5 ast at the half.
Reeve loves this kind of post player.
47-35 UConn at the half
Williams 21 pts
Westbrook 12 pts
Bueckers not really needing to show up with the other guards going off:3 pts, 3 ast, 3 stl
Scalia 15 pts (5-7 three)
Winters 12 pts (4-7 three)
Gophers relying on the three. Suspect that will be taken away after the half.

UConn up 12 at the half -- somehow -- without an effective pass-to-the-post-player inside game, without a particularly effective 3pt game, without much help from the bench, and without what's-her-name who won NPOY awards last season.
The "somehow" was mainly a lot of drives and layups by non-NPOY guards along with five 3pters by them.
So far in 1.5 games, I see UConn as a team with seven effective players: the starters plus Juhasz and Fudd.
Maybe the scoring architecture for UConn will be different in the second half.
Scalia is a pistol for the Gophers -- fun to watch. |

UConn stepped up their defense which is typically especially after the Gophers got too many easy shots in the 1st half. Minnesota was flustered and had no composure.
Hopefully the Gopher offense will get more fluid and have more movement because so far this year it feel very stagnant and that people have to wait for some of the others to know where to go or what to do.

At the beginning of the season I said that ONO's greatest skill is facilitating from the high post and that she would be second on UCONN in assists.

So that's where she ended up! She began at Seton Hall but apparently wasn't happy with her playing time.

Went to North Carolina A&T for 2 seasons before transferring here for her graduate year

That part I knew, but I didn't know step 3. I swear grad transfers are WCBB's answer to the WATN threads.

UConn certainly improved its FT shooting and seemingly its defense from the Arkansas game.
A significant belief system in Husky Nation for about two years has been that if UConn were to get Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd, they would have the greatest pair of guards ever, or something like that. Today, UConn's pair of guards dominated with 47 of the team's 88 points. Too bad they will both graduate at the end of the season: Evina Westbrook and Christyn Williams.
Oh, that other duo combined for 13 points.
Which is more likely good than bad news for Husky Nation. I think. |
