Don't want to steal the thread, but thought posting here would be better than starting a new one.

We'll be covering the EuroLeague for the first time over The Next this season and i already wrote the first entry in the shape of a FAQ for the 2021-22 Season.

You can read it here: https://www.thenexthoops.com/features/the-2021-22-euroleague-women-has-arrived-preview-europe-overseas/

We'll have weekly roundups every Friday, and of course all feedback is welcomed! Yes, including possible players that might have slipped through t the list at the bottom of that article expected to play in the EL this season. Thanks!

I would say this is an upset in Euroleague play today

Basket Landes/France beat Fenerbahce/Turkey 70-65

I believe Fenerbahce was ranked first in Group B, with Sopron Basket right behind them

Box score here

Epiphanny Prince joined Dynamo Kursk recently so she's not on your list. I am not sure what criteria you are using so I am not sure what else might need to be added. It looks like you including people who played in the WNBA back as far as 2019, but what about someone like Klara Lundquist who signed a contract prior to the season? You can take a look at our tracker for others of possible interest, but I am only adding players who have actually appeared in a game for their overseas team.

That was a pretty big upset. Fenerbahce is obviously not at full strength, but they were at home with fans and Landes was missing Magarity. The Landes multi-point guard system could be something to keep an eye on later in the season.

Wacky results

Schio/Italy beats Landes/France week 1, by 40 points

Landes beats Fenberahce week 2, by 5 points, after Fenerbahce beat Galatasary by 20 points the prior week

Girona, which just lost a Spanish league game by 20 points, to Promete, beats Schio by 8 points at Schio.

Weird results are always more likely in the earlier weeks. Limited preseason, teams still working out what they're doing, and some of them still waiting on key imports to arrive. Also EuroLeague seemed to start really early this year.

I did not expect that we would have to deal with COVID-related postponements this season, but we have already had a few.

Speaking of that, I missed the story last week, but after a few players had to back out of playing in Australia's men's league due to declining to be vaccinated, we had our first one on the women's side with Katherine Plouffe no longer headed to Bendigo.

The site is down right now so Mo is taking care of it. FIBA does have all the video links for both competitions up already for this week.

I've been laughing for a couple weeks that a team would *choose* to pay both Kiah Stokes and Elizabeth Williams. I can't really get my head around it such fascinating choice against offense.

Then I looked at today's scores, and was fully prepared to eat my words, but 1 of 8 free throws?! Really?

Stokes does not count against restrictions so she will probably get paid in Turkey for a while like Barbara Turner/Bahar Ozturk. No comment on the rest of the Fenerbahce disaster.

Question on international rules and intentional fouls.

If you commit an intentional foul in the last minute of a game are you tossed?

Example, in yesterdays Euroleague game between Landes and Kursk it appears Arike/Kursk was tossed for an intentional foul with less than 30 seconds left. She leaves the court, to boos and whistles from the French fans.

On the previous play Arike stole the ball, scored on the lay up, appeared to be fouled, no foul was called, and Arike was complaining. On the play back down the court Arike was called for an intentional foul, tripping. The box score only lists her with 4 fouls.

Here is the you tube link. Note there is no game clock on the main page so you need to scroll to 1 hour and 48 minutes into the game, the score should be Landes 76 Kursk 73. The video is in a pop up box on the right of the page

I was completely confused by why she was thrown out as well. Seemed like it should've just been a standard unsportsmanlike foul call and play on. Eventually worked out that she'd been called for a technical foul earlier in the game, and unlike in the US, tech+unsportsmanlike = disqualification under FIBA rules. In the WNBA or NBA, I believe, you're allowed to get 1 tech and 1 flagrant in the same game and stay in - it has to be 2 of the same to get thrown out. In FIBA it's 2 of any of them.

Can't imagine the Turkish federation is thrilled about their return on that investment.

As for the "Fenerbahce disaster".... Shocked Very Happy

They did manage to replace her pretty quickly with Shay Colley so we will see if they just end up not making a big fuss with Aari and letting it go. Based on their initial statement, it sounded like they were ready to go scorched earth Olympiacos-Erlana Larkins on her and try to force her to pay them.

Ahom111 do you know whats up with J. Brooks on Sopron?

2 weeks ago she was in uniform but didnt play, and this past week she was in street clothes. I am talking about the Eurolegue games I have seen.
She certainly makes Soprons team a bit more diverse, then just Williams and Hatar.
