Jewell Loyd received no MVP votes despite finishing 7th in the league in scoring. She's the highest scorer to receive no votes this year, the third time she has this dubious honor...

1997 Jennifer Gillom 5th in scoring
1998 Tamecka Dixon 5th
1999 Adrienne Goodson 9th
2000 Sophia Witherspoon 12th
2001 Lauren Jackson 8th
2002 Marie Ferdinand 11th
2003 Nykesha Sales 8th
2004 Sheryl Swoopes 8th
2005 Alana Beard 9th
2006 Cappie Pondexter 4th
2007 Cappie Pondexter 8th
2008 Jia Perkins 11th
2009 Asjha Jones 8th
2010 Sylvia Fowles 6th
2011 Crystal Langhorne 4th
2012 Katie Douglas 10th
2013 Cappie Pondexter 8th
2014 Skylar Diggins 2nd
2015 Riquna Williams 6th
2016 Jewell Loyd 8th
2017 Jewell Loyd 9th
2018 Tina Charles 7th
2019 Tina Charles 6th
2020 Kelsey Mitchell 6th
2021 Jewell Loyd 7th

It's difficult to think of her as an MVP because she is so hot and cold. Look at her last 5 games - kinda the season in micro - points: 15, 37, 5, 20, 8. When she's hot, she's very hot. When she's not, she's very not.

This, as well as not even being the best player on your own team.

For what it's worth, I think she is the most dangerous player on her team and clearly the best shooting guard in the W.

I gave her a vote in the Rebkell awards as I believe she is one of the most underrated players in this league.

Seattle literally goes as she goes. That's pretty valuable.

If you want a little Trivia Time about this list...

Of the 20 players listed, which four have never received any MVP votes?

You are half right. Neither Kelsey Mitchell nor Riquna Williams have ever received an MVP vote. Jia Perkins got one vote in 2007. Sophia Witherspoon got three votes in 2002.

Since no one else guessed, I'll throw out two more guesses: Loyd and Marie Ferdinand.

Love Loyd but she was certainly not a Top-5 player this year by any measure. Some games she's her glistening Gold Mamba self, other games she's just complete Pyrite. Embarassed

How did anyone think Sophia Witherspoon was the MVP of the 2002 Sparks team?

I’d hope it was due to less voters and her coming from Portland to LA at that time assuming she pushed them over some
Type of hump after they had already won a title the year before without her. But her season high that year was only 19. Against whoo? You guessed it #Portland Witherspoon should be recognized more for what she did for Portland in year 1 versus year 2.

It was a source of much consternation at the time. The ESPN board was rife with speculation as to who voted for her and why.

Looking at the numbers, that's completely freaking insane. At least when there are questionable votes you can usually see how someone got there from overvaluing counting stats or something like that. Witherspoon averaged 5pts, 1 board and 1 assist, on less than 12 minutes per game. Someone must've clicked the wrong name on a drop-down list or something. Even a staggeringly biased hometown LA voter who filled their ballot with Sparks wouldn't have given three points to Witherspoon.

In 2002 MVP votes were submitted by faxing in a paper ballot

Here's one from 2001 that I happen to have. Award ballots continued in this format for many years afterwards. Voter name and affiliation redacted to protect the innocent.

That is very, very cool-and crazy that it was only 20 years ago

Maybe someone had really terrible handwriting? Even Weatherspoon would've made more sense than Witherspoon.

Speaking as an expert in terrible handwriting... you could screw up the names, but the team names look nothing alike, and that 2001 ballot has a spot for the team name. I suppose they could have left it blank, but that extra failsafe makes it less likely.

I agree, but was thinking that if scribbled quickly 'LA' could just about vaguely resemble 'NY'.

Keep finding theories and researching the actual voters for 150 more posts and you'll be where we were at the time
