This list aims to be as functional as it is interesting – interesting in that players’ hometowns are more tidbits for us fans to pride ourselves on knowing; but functional in that if we wanted to speculate trades and signings for players that might want to play for a franchise “closer to home”, this is where we could look up where their “home” might be. Here, “hometown” is generally defined as what is listed on their college/WNBA profile, and/or the town where the player’s final high school was.

Everything is relative to driving distance; if a list is of two franchises, that means the franchises are of approximately equal driving distance from the player’s hometown. I used this parameter since generally when a player plays for or in the closest franchise to their hometown, any friends & family in attendance are able to be there via ground vehicle and not necessarily by airplane.

To find said driving distances, I utilized map apps (Google Maps, etc.), which are typically updated to reflect current traffic, so the quickest possible driving time from one location to another isn’t always the same given real-time traffic estimates. But of course, actual distance from one location to another can’t to my knowledge be utilized, given that driving path is typically not a straight line. It’s a very imperfect method, but it’s the best I could think of. Better ideas to better capture driving time accuracy are welcome.

A couple examples: Theresa Plaisance’s hometown is nearly 8 hours away from Arlington, TX (where Dallas’ arena is), as well as nearly 8 hours away from College Park, GA (where Atlanta’s arena is); thus, she is listed under the "Dallas and Atlanta" list. And obviously neither Dallas nor Atlanta is close to her Louisiana hometown and therefore particularly drive-able, but they’re the closest. Some players don't really have a "hometown team" in that sense, but I still chose to classify everyone instead of just those that appeared to have one in order to retain objectivity (versus going through whose hometowns have a franchise "close" to them, under some sort of definition of "close", and whose don't).
Stefanie Dolson’s hometown of Port Jervis, NY is geographically much closer to Brooklyn, NY than it is to Uncasville, CT, but there’s only about an hour difference between driving to either location at any given time (~2 hours to get to Brooklyn, ~3 hours to get to Uncasville). So, I chose to put her on the list with both those franchises, even though one could reasonably argue she should be on the New York list instead. Full disclosure, when I was in doubt, I erred on the side of putting a player in a two-franchise list rather than a one-franchise list. Players listed in bold currently play for the hometown franchise they are listed under. When a player was close/the closest to more than two franchises, then the player was simply listed on the list with their two closest franchises – by my count, no one was equally close to three or more franchise locations.

For players that have never had any sort of documented hometown in the US, such as having played high school basketball at a school in the US, they are listed under “Non-USA Players”. Possibly amongst others listed inaccurately, Bahamian Jonquel Jones was not on that list simply because she had a documented US “hometown” (she played high school basketball in Maryland), thus she is listed accordingly.

I realize some of this info is purely trivial as it pertains to where players’ families are now. For example, I believe Crystal Langhorne’s family is largely based in the DC area and she might still own a house there, so her "home" franchise would really be Washington and not New York. But I knew it would be too difficult, unrealistic, and maybe even a little weird to keep track of every player’s current city (if some of them even have one). If anyone wants to make that list, good luck. The cities we live in can always change; the cities we're from in a general sense don't.

If one of the mods is ever able to open up access to this to everyone so that anyone can take it upon themself to make corrections or updates whenever they see fit, I hereby grant it. Otherwise, if this list has any glaring omissions or mistakes, in which either someone’s hometown is simply incorrect or my judgment was completely off in which list I put someone, let me know and it’ll get corrected.

If a franchise relocates, an expansion franchise is born, or (god forbid) a franchise folds, the lists will be reconfigured accordingly.

At the very least, I will try to keep this updated after rosters are first finalized at the start of the season and then after the season ends.

Nice idea, but not possible unfortunately (at least not while we're stuck with this 15 year old version of the message board software)

I'm not sure playing close to "home" matters that much, as parents move, people change, etc. (And for those who came out as lesbians after leaving home, even in these semi-woke times, that might be an issue as well.)

What I find interesting about the list -- and thanks much for doing it -- is where the talent has come from. Texas, Georgia and SoCal lead the list, which echoes the high school rankings of the past. Right now, the scene has shifted a bit, and the DMV has had most of the talent while Georgia has faded. Texas and SoCal are down a bit, and NYC has really fallen off the charts.

Great stuff ...

Thank you/You're welcome!! Very Happy Most of the research was done throughout last fall, but I didn't want to post it until the time felt right - and also until I had time to check and re-check everyone's towns as well as internally debate where I felt some of them should be haha.

Great stuff, Stormeo!

Clay, I was surprised by the lack of players (in terms of raw numbers) on the list from the Oregon/Washington areas. The Pacific Northwest has produced a large number of Division I players in recent years and the college teams there have all had moments of tremendous success in the past few years.

It goes in cycles, especially in the smaller states. There was a time Oregon especially was a girls' basketball power but this year, for example, not a single team is a candidate for the MacPreps top 25. Washington is also down, and even its best recent grads (the Hull twins) don't appear to be WNBA stars.

Bigger populations cushion some of the natural cycles, but even so, there are obvious shifts over time.

So few professional athletes in any sport get to play for their "hometown team" that I have to wonder how big a factor that motivation is.

We've been lucky here in Seattle that Sue Bird adopted this as her home and didn't bolt back to New York at the first opportunity.

Many of our other sports stars have kept a home here even after they move to other teams or retire.

It is interesting that the supply of local talent in an area seems to have nothing to do with how successful the WNBA franchises are. Atlanta and Dallas produce the most local talent but both WNBA teams struggle with attendance.

Atlanta looks good on the list by having all of Florida. I would guess very few Floridians actually travel to Atlanta to see the Dream.

Sadly, girls aren't sports fan in the same way boys are. And many male girls' coaches (club and high school) pay minimal attention to the WNBA.

Just for fun, mostly as a way to get a perspective on geography, I tried to figure out the closest team for the international players. I wasn't always able to find their hometown, so in those cases I defaulted to their place of birth. Also, measured by distance, all the European players were closest to Uncasville. There are two international airports listed in Connecticut (New Haven and Windsor Locks), but I don't know how practical it is in terms of available flights. I suspect most people would fly into New York first, which makes it the functional closest city. I hedged by listing both NY and CT.

Non-USA Players:
Natalie Achonwa (Guelph, CAN) NYL (483 mi) IND (528) CT (536)
Kayla Alexander (Milton, CAN) NYL (472 mi) IND (498) CT (518)
Rebecca Allen (Melbourne, AUS) LA (12,766 km)
Liz Cambage (Melbourne, AUS) LA (12,766 km)
Bridget Carleton (Chatham, CAN) CHI (334 mi) IND (338)
Maite Cazorla (Las Palmas, ESP) CT (5,282 km) NYL (5,445)
Damiris Dantas (São Paulo, BRA) ATL (7,515 km) DC (7,627) NYL (7,681) CT (7,683)
Temi Fagbenle (London, GBR) CT (3,351 km) NYL (3,459)
Marie Gülich (Leverkusen, GER) CT (5,876 km) NYL (6,049)
Marine Johannès (Lisieux, FRA) CT (5,502 km) NYL (5,678)
Emma Meesseman (Ypres, BEL) CT (5,614 km) NYL (5,789)
Kim Mestdagh (Ypres, BEL) CT (5,614 km) NYL (5,789)
Astou Ndour (Las Palmas, ESP) CT (5,282 km) NYL (5,445)
Kia Nurse (Hamilton, CAN) NYL (466 mi) IND (488) CT (512)
Ji-Su Park (Seongnam, KOR) SEA (8,318 km)
Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe (Toronto, CAN) NYL (491 mi) IND (528) CT (537)
Alanna Smith (Hobart, AUS) LA (12,817 km)
Stephanie Talbot (Katherine, AUS) SEA (12,330 km)
Ramu Tokashiki (Kashiwa, JPN) SEA (7,659 km)
Maria Vadeeva (Moscow, RUS) CT (7,349 km) NYL (7,506)
Han Xu (Shijiazhuang, CHN) SEA (8,948 km)
Amanda Zahui B. (Stockholm, SWE) CT (6,155 km) NYL (6,316)

Apparently, very few Floridians went to WNBA games in Miami and Orlando when they had teams either.

They did OK. Orlando even did well enough to bid on an All Star Game.

In the hierarchy of a professional athlete's needs and wants I would put:

1. Money
2. Winning
3. Work environment/culture/organization
4. Relationships with coaches and teammates
5. Geography/hometown

Tweed (New Haven) is a commuter airport with flights to Charlotte, DC, etc. I don't think there's any direct international flights. Bradley (Windsor Locks) does have direct flights, but I think the main route is Aer Lingus to Dublin.

I know a lot of CT people fly international out of Boston, but I think in general, the Liberty have the edge over the Sun in ease of travel for overseas players.

And thanks for doing all this work!

I think geography is much more important than home town -- and by that I mean adults choose where to live based on a variety of factors, and since most WNBA players lived away from home during their college years, and have done so as pros, their connection to their home town may be very fragile, especially if their parents have moved.

I'm sure some players would like to be near where they went to high school, but how many people on this board choose where to live based on where they grew up? Now I still live close to my high school, but it's because my career is here, and because I've lived here pretty much all my life. But if I had lived somewhere else during college and in my 20s, I don't know that I would have been inspired to come back.

Bumping this mostly for my own reference. But yes, it is indeed updated with everyone who was on a roster (and more!) at the end of the 2020 season. Very Happy

The New York Team along with the Texas Teams seem to be favorable. Although Chicago does look contending just like their Sky. LA seems to produce a lot of great guards that's about it with this gen .

There is some history of star players wanting to play close to home (Candace Parker, Katie Douglas, Lindsay Whalen), but it's never been a real theme in this league.

The nearest commercial airport to Uncasville, CT is in Warwick, RI. The travel distance is 51.4 miles by car from T.F. Green airport (PVD) to the casino complex.

Great work - is it possible to get a list of colleges they went to which is closest to the current franchise locations?
