I say this as a fan: we gotta stop allowing fans to vote for stuff.

Yep. Even if people who know what they're doing provide a slate of candidates to vote for, people are going to pick their own GOAT, statistics and sense be damned.

The 'Community Assist' qualifier is so dumb that it makes qualifiers a bit dubious (because one year it was given to the whole Liberty roster, and in 2020 it went to the entire league). But Across The Timeline has the 75 who appear to maybe qualify: https://acrossthetimeline.com/wnba/top-players.html# |

So if we start with the 20 who were on the list last year:
Seimone Augustus
Sue Bird
Swin Cash
Tamika Catchings
Cynthia Cooper-Dyke
Yolanda Griffith
Becky Hammon
Lauren Jackson
Lisa Leslie
Maya Moore
Deanna Nolan
Candace Parker
Ticha Penicheiro
Cappie Pondexter
Katie Smith
Sheryl Swoopes
Diana Taurasi
Tina Thompson
Teresa Weatherspoon
Lindsay Whalen
18 of them are slam dunk choices this time around too, but I don't expect Cash and Weatherspoon to make it this time. Neither had been named to prior teams despite being eligible, and they both feel like outliers in that list. I would probably say the same with Penicheiro, but I am alone on that limb. I am sure she will make it.
So, if that leaves us with 7 spots to fill, who gets them?
There are 6 MVPs eligible who weren't named last time. Fowles, DelleDonne, Charles, and Stewart are all easy bets. Oguwumike probably is too, though her criteria don't match the other four. I suspect Wilson is too early in her career, but you never know.
So, that leaves, say, two slots. McCougtry stands out from the crowd and should be an easy choice, though she has pretty consistently been undervalued throughout her career.
For the last slot, I could see several possibilities. Griner, Vandersloot, Dupree, and Bonner are possibilities. I think my vote goes to Bonner today, but I might thing differently tomorrow.

Katie Douglas.
Not coming at your list Matty, but I'm starting to think she was may be the most underappreciated player in the league's history beause I seem to be the only one who ever brings her up in these conversations.

You are preaching to the choir. Douglas would be on my list for sure. But at this point, I have resigned myself to her never getting real consideration for lists like this.

And she did it on both sides of the ball.

This!
At the risk of beating a dead horse, the fact that she nor Tweety got selected to any USA teams let’s me know all I need about this process. Maybe now the Callan is gone things won’t be so political.

Bumping this as a reminder that the announcement is tomorrow during the ABC game. Because the league has done such a staggeringly invisible job of publicising it that I wouldn't be at all surprised if everyone has forgotten by now. |

I decided to make my list "NBA 50 at 50" style: Top 10 backcourt + Top 15 frontcourt.
Backcourt
Seimone Augustus
Sue Bird
Cynthia Cooper
Becky Hammon
Deanna Nolan
Ticha Penicheiro
Cappie Pondexter
Katie Smith
Courtney Vandersloot
Lindsay Whelan
Frontcourt
Tamika Catchings
Tina Charles
Elena Delle Donne
Sylvia Fowles
Yolanda Griffith
Lauren Jackson
Lisa Leslie
Angel McCoughtry
Maya Moore
Nneka Ogwumike
Candace Parker
Breanna Stewart
Sheryl Swoopes
Diana Taurasi
Tina Thompson
Every player who has been named MVP made my Top 25 list, except A'ja Wilson, whom I determined hasn't been in the league long enough to qualify. Three Finals MVP didn't make my list (Ruth Riley, Betty Lennox, Emma Messeman): of those three, none of them have made an All-Star team more than once, and only Betty Lennox has ever won a post-season award other than Finals MVP.

Huh... I got twenty-four out of twenty-five right, and I did not imagine the one I got wrong being Swin Cash.
EDIT - Twenty-three out of twenty-five: apparently, they didn't accept my reasoning for Vandersloot, either.

Cash and Penicheiro over Vandersloot? Get the fuck out of here.
