The US doesn't seem to 'get' it that the relay is about the handoffs. You can have fabulous athletes but if they can't do a handoff you lose. And even with the shitty handoff, the guy running the anchor still was in decent position but totally got out ran by most of the other teams.

Carl Lewis didn't pull any punches!

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2021/08/04/carl-lewis-us-relay-failure-reach-olympic-final-clown-show/5494410001/

but on point, he doesn't directly say anything about that poor last leg. Normally the anchor is the fastest guy. Why didn't we have the fastest guy there? Instead we had a guy who finished 6th in the 100 at the US trials. I guess Lewis makes the point indirectly by saying that all the agents want their guy to get a medal. Anyway we got what we deserved.

He doesn't refer to specifics, but he mentions "athletes running the wrong legs," (quoted in the article). So I'd say it's safe to assume he's including the last leg in that statement.

It is interesting that Jamaica can have so many top, top world class runners. Is it genetics? What they eat? How they train? I assume it's not all illegal since only a few of them have been caught at it... but there are enough in that group over quite a few years, that it is somewhat concerning.

It does also spiral from previous success. Kids see someone from their country succeeding in a particular sport or discipline, and suddenly any young person in that country with a scrap of athletic talent is giving that thing a try. Also the funding tends to go towards stuff that the country's already had some success in (things like rowing and cycling get an enormous amount of money over here, for example).

But yes, I imagine there's also a genetic element to it somewhere along the line. That's the sort of thing I expect there have been scientific studies and doctoral theses written about if you really wanted to dive into it.

Some people wondered how East Germany and small Soviet bloc countries could win so many running and strength events in the 1970's and 80's.

Quote:
Yes, and how many times must the cannonballs fly
Before they're forever banned?

. . . .

Yes, and how many times can a man turn his head
And pretend that he just doesn't see?

The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind

Carl Lewis specifically called out the horrible stick passing, lack of relay practice, and the third leg run by Ronnie Baker. The third leg is all turn, and Baker never runs a turn, as 200 and 400 meter runners must do expertly, because he's strictly a 100 meter flats guy.

To succeed at a sport requires some combination of history/tradition in the sport, youth development programs, and institutional support.

I certainly hope so! The real question is who else will be on the team?

Hayes
Mu
Muhammad
McLaughlin

Any of those four along with Felix can win the gold.

Clinging to a one-stroke lead, with three holes to go. Hang in there, Nelly!

Hard to imagine who is going to be more negatively affected by this lightning delay.

Team USA men showing the value of having some quality defenders in the lineup. I thought it was the main difference in the gold medal game.

Yup.

Jrue is like Beard. I would major most great wing/guard defenders foul all game, but never felt that way about Beard. I don't feel that way about Jrue too. Just an all around great defender.

Booker exposed himself as being a heck of a defender as well - gonna remember that next season. Laughing

And Draymond unsurprisingly showed his value. He's just a player who brings so much to whatever team he's on. It wouldn't surprise me if he was the "coach on the floor" player as well.

France has a very good team. I couldn't help thinking what they would have looked like with a prime Tony Parker.

Ko fails to birdie #18! Korda can two-putt to gold!

EDIT - Missed birdie by inches!

US takes Silver in baseball, making Eddy Alvarez just the sixth athlete (third American) to medal in both the summer and winter games. He won a speed skating silver medal in the 2014 games.

Only Eddie Eagan won gold at both, boxing in 1920 then bobsled in 1932

Sydney to Allyson to Dalilah to Athing

Too bad Felix is not in her prime because with this trio a World record is not out of the question.

Halfway through the marathon Galen Rupp is hanging at the back of the lead group. None of the Chinese runners are close. I still expect one of the Kenyans to win.

Rupp has faded. Eliud Kipchoge has opened a substantial lead with 6 miles to go.
