USA Basketball appears to be staying consistent on the plans for 3x3 and 5x5. That said, 3x3 has not been an easy ride for the U.S., and gold is far from assured.
At some point, we may see 3x3 specialists, but I don't think Ionescu, to name just one, will stay 3x3 for her whole international career.

It appears Elizabeth Williams could be competing for the Nigerian women's basketball national team at the Olympics.
D’Tigress on Sunday concluded the first phase of their 2020 Olympics camping in Atlanta which lasted for 10 days with 15 players in attendance.
The training camp which is one of the numerous being put in place by the Nigerian Basketball Federation has been described as a great concept that allowed the current players in the team to bond well with the new faces invited by Coach Otis Hughley.
After spending about 10 days together, she believes the latest addition of Nicole Enabosi, Erica Ogwumike, Oderah Chidom, Amy Okonkwo and Elizabeth Williams will only strengthen the team and make it easier to compete and fight as a stronger unit.

I am surprised, as Williams played for USA Basketball on the U16, U17, and U19 teams (and was the FIBA Americas U16 Championship MVP).
That being said, Williams is a British-born Nigerian-American. If she is unlikely to make Team USA, this would be an opportunity to still play in the Olympics.

From what I noticed on Colliers experence on the 3x3 team, she is certainly beter suited to play 5x5. It requires a different skill set to excell in 3x3 and she did not appear to have it. Wasn't quick enough laterally.

quite entertaining but doesn't really look like basketball. Katie Lou whines like normal. The facial expressions are pretty intense all around.

Is it just me or do players get fatigued easier toward the end of the game? The defensive players make no effort to keep up and in some cases, the offense misses those wide open bunnies. Maybe there needs to be more subbing, but seems like they're already going in and out on both sides anyway

So USA won today to qualify. I don't really understand though. If only three teams qualify, is there just a three team tournament at the Olympics? Or where do the other teams come from?

thanks. I knew it had to be on the fiba site but had gone there and tried to find anything about it but went in circles - lots about men. And then tried google search and found lots of stuff but nothing that explained...all that to say I appreciate that direct link.
Germany kind of got screwed by being in the same group as the US and France, who appear to have been the best in the overall competition. will they qualify for the universality thingie? [Dallas hopes not]

I don't believe so, no. Only one of the teams who would've been in the Universality qualifier made it in this weekend (Japan), so only the first team on the waitlist gets added (Estonia). Germany were next up on the waitlist, from what I can tell, if any of the other five (Hungary, Iran, Netherlands, Italy, Chinese Taipei) had gotten in.
And yeah, horrible draw for Germany. Although they did lose fairly convincingly to both the US and France. |

I'm starting to like 3x3 better than regular basketball.

USA Basketball burying seemingly important information in an article:
https://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2021/06/3x-national-announcement.aspx
What do they mean by this?
Quote: |
In addition to the lure of a 3x3 national championship, the event also will serve as the final evaluation of athletes for selection to the U.S. Women’s 3x3 Olympic Team and will serve to identify athletes for other 2021 USA men’s and women’s 3x3 National Teams. |
Are they keeping alternates in the wings if they need to replace a player? |

I'm not a fan of any of the current players, per se, but they she stay with the ones that got them to Tokyo.

EDD has yet to play
and
DT and N. Ogwumike are both out with injuries for 4 weeks plus
Any chance any of them miss the Olympics? Or are they being cautious precisely so they will be healed and ready for the Olympics?
ATM I have 10 in with two open spots (but if the injured players aren't ready there are suddenly a decent amount of openings on a team that last year seemed locked in)
Bird/Gray
DT/SDS/*
EDD/**
Stewart/Wilson/N. Ogwumike
Griner/Fowles
Competitors for open spots (in order of likelihood IMO)
* Loyd, Ogunbowale, Ionescu
** Collier, Deshields
If DT isn't healthy by the Olympics 2 of Loyd/Ogunbowale/Ionescu could make the final team
If EDD isn't healthy by the Olympics I could see both Collier and Deshields make it.
I also wouldn't count Charles out I could definitely see Charles get N. Ogwumike's spot if she isn't healthy or I could even see Charles get one of the two open spots id Team USA feels OK with 6 posts (Maybe Stewart or Nneka could play some SF)
Does Laney have any Team USA experience? her incredible play the last two seasons could get her some consideration but I doubt it unless she has been in camps before.

Laney played for the U16 team in 2009 and U17 team in 2010. She was in camp for the 2013 WUG team but didn't make the final roster.
