For those of you who like to compare such things; this year's final four featured two former P5 assistants on their first head coaching assignments, one former mid-major coach who moved up to a P5 job, and one P5 coach who was hired away from another P5 job.

Clark-Heard or Ashley Early. The rest of them are mid-majors and/or know what a horrendous mess Vandy is right now, being right down the road like Insell and the Belmont coach. I doubt Missouri State's Coach Mox would be interested in moving at the moment since she just got to a rising program.
It's going to take some kind of effort and possibly supernatural forces to return the program to anything like what it was under Jim Foster. Melanie Balcomb broke it and Steph White might be able to coach but couldn't recruit, or something. The program is badly broken.

That could be a worse move for Ralph than Morgan Valley's, going from assistant at Arizona to head coach at Hartford. |

Speaking of Hartford, I saw where they had commissioned a study re: athletics as the school is really struggling financially in the wake of covid. The committee has recommended that they look at moving their athletic programs to Division III. The timing couldn't be worse as their men's basketball program just made their first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't a LOT of schools looking into their options right about now.

Agree-this would be a terrible move for Shea, IMO.

Why? Just because Stephanie White did not win does not mean it isn't possible. It wasn't that long ago that Vanderbilt was consistent NCAA tournament team, and there are a lot of teams that have had way less success than Vanderbilt in women's basketball. For someone who has never been a head coach how picky do you really expect her to be? The best jobs will not hire her over successful head coaches so she has to start somewhere.

Shea could do well, or she could do poorly. Hard to know, since she's never been a HC, but she does come from a program that knows how to win. The question is whether she can build a staff and whether she can recruit. Vandy is very, very broken at this point and rebuilding it will be really difficult no matter who takes it over.

My concern is the style of play in the SEC. It's very gritty, defense-oriented, sometimes painful on offense, low scoring basketball. That's just not a system that Shea has been developed in. I think the style of play in the ACC or B1G are better suited for her. But, you can't beat living in Nashville. I hope she has a good 5-6 year run there, and then she comes back to take over UCONN.

You really think Geno is going to last that long? I'm not so sure. I don't think he looks well, and he didn't look well before he had Covid. That is not wishful thinking. (I know you think I'm a hater, I'm not.) That is a trained eye.

So, now that Shea to Vandy seems to be a done deal-who replaces Shea at UCONN?

We seem to have two threads going on the same coaching subject.
I'm surprised by Ralph's leaving UConn because I assumed she had the inside track as Geno's replacement from her assistant position. At Vanderbilt she faces the enormous task of rebuilding one of the worst programs (recently) in one of the toughest conferences. If she fails, and anyone could fail at such a difficult task, she'll lose both the Vanderbilt job after about five years and she'll also lose the opportunity to replace Geno.
Of course, if she succeeds well at Vandy, that could be taken as verification that she's a worthy successor to Geno at UConn if she wants to be. I guess she's decided to take that gamble.
Or maybe she's been told that she's unlikely to replace Geno for some reason, so she's taking her best opportunity now as a head coach.
It will be interesting to see who replaces Ralph, whether it's someone from inside or outside the UConn family. Ironically, the last UConn assistant, who just POOF disappeared into the ether in the middle of the 2019-20 season, was a Vanderbilt alum, Jasmine Lister. |

The other coaching thread should be for news because multiple times in prior years futureisbright has asked to keep that thread for news.
That's why I made this one for discussion and analysis of said coaching moves.

UConn posted the requirements for the AC opening.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree; five years of coaching experience working within a women’s collegiate Division I basketball program; coaching experience at two or more universities that are members of Power 5 conferences; working knowledge of the correct application of NCAA regulations; strong commitment to the academic goals of the University; and excellent organizational, teaching, communication and public relations skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Division I head coaching experience; coaching experience on team(s) that have advanced to at least the regional round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship; demonstrated experience coaching players who have achieved conference and/or national honors; former playing experience at the Division I collegiate level.
Kind of eliminates a lot of people, including current Assoc coach at UConn--> CD.

If a coach had already achieved all of these things at the program they are at, why would they want to leave?

Kinda seems to me like they want a very experienced former head coach who might want to try to get back in the college game, like say Gail Goestenkors. She just so happens to meet every minimum and preferred qualification, so Geno may be trying to throw her a subliminal bone

While the addition of Gail would certainly be a great hire from a coaching standpoint, it doesn't make much sense from an age standpoint. The staff at UCONN needs someone young and vibrant who can connect with kids.

How many "young and vibrant" coaches can even meet the minimum qualifications (2 Power 5 jobs), much less the preferred ones (been a HC, reached the Regional round of the NCAAs, etc)?
I will say that I think he most likely has someone in mind (most coaches are usually prepared for a staff member to move on) as the "coached at 2 or more Power 5 conferences" as a minimum requirement seems like a way for him/UConn to effectively shrink the candidate pool substantially.
Anyway, I think this is a big hire and Ralph will not be easy to replace.

Most UCONN fans that I talk to seem to think it's Morgan Valley. She took over as HC at Hartford, which was in total dissaray...but rumor has it that they might take a step down to DIII because of Covid. Morgan was a very successful assistant coach at VaTech, Washington, and Arizona. She is the person that seems to meet all the qualifications.

At this point, as long as Bueckers is there, UCONN won't have any issues having players lined up to play for them. A year as an assistant coach at UCONN might show GG is serious enough about the college game that she will put in the work to re-earn a head coaching position. My guess is after one year, she'd get another HC shot and have about a decade left to close out her career. Maybe Geno isn't all too impressed with the younger coaches, and would rather GG come on board and get a 5-10 year shot running UCONN as his successor. These qualifications seem oddly specific and laser focused, and the only other two that cross my mind would be Balcomb and McCallie. But it almost feels like a guarantee that Geno is looking for someone to step into his role in the next 3-5 years.

No doubt it's a done deal, written to describe the person who has already been picked. They did the same thing last time with a job description exactly matching Jasmine Lister. Agree that right-next-door Morgan Valley would fit this description. |

Total disarray? Hartford was coming off a 23-11 season (third straight year with a winning record) with a WNIT appearance. Kim McNeill left to become the head coach at East Carolina.
This would be a GREAT move for Valley seeing as her head coaching record at Hartford over the last 2 seasons is 4-37. Yes, a pandemic struck towards the end of her first year, but she was 1-28 that season prior to everything getting shut down. Some people are better off as assistant coaches and she may very well fall into that category.
I'm not trying to knock her or her selection whatsoever, just merely pointing out facts. To go back to UConn and learn from Geno/CD would be awesome for anybody.

There should be five qualifications for a UConn assistant coach: super recruiter, super recruiter, super recruiter, super recruiter and super recruiter. Geno and Chris can take care of X's and O's.
Does Morgan Valley have these qualifications? I don't know but I have some doubts. She always seemed to be a rather buttoned-up or somewhat introverted person during her four years as a UConn player. Super recruiters usually affirmatively project magnetic, instantly likable or convincingly trustworthy personalities -- like a top salesperson. |
