Ekaterinburg is insanely loaded with talent. They would easily win the WNBA Championship. To those in knowledge of the Russian league, how did or can they accrue such talent on one team? Are there no monetary limits, restrictions etc.?

They got the best players from all over the world. Sloot and Quigley are "hungarian", Meesseman is belgium, Torrens from Spain, JJ from the bahama's.
Stewie and Griner are the only official USA players

Like seriously, have they lost a championship while being this “loaded”?

Just noticed this today RE: Chelsea Gray

https://twitter.com/unigirona/status/1362047050003730434

English Translation

MEDICAL PRESS RELEASE | After performing the corresponding tests today, the Medical Services of the Spar Girona report that the player Chelsea Gray suffers a bone contusion in the ankle region.

The American is expected to be out for about two weeks.

Chelsea was on the bench today, not dressed and was using a crutch on her right side.

There is a Tournament in Spain the weekend of March 4-7, not sure if she makes it back for that.
Euroleague games on March 17 and 19 vs top Spanish team Avenida are also on the schedule.

There are no monetary restrictions for them. In the Russian league, they can only field four of their non-Russian players per game, but they can rotate as much as they want between them. Their owner also owns a large copper mining company in the city and he is a little paranoid about losing.

They are bending the rules in the sense that no other team could assemble the same roster right now. FIBA's competition rules changed so that teams could only field three players who were considered non-naturalized Europeans and only two of those could not hold any European citizenship. They did make an exception for naturalized Europeans that were already under contract which allows them to to play under their previous status for the same team. Two or three of Vandersloot, Quigley, and Jones fall under that so they can probably expect contracts there for a few more years.

Dynamo Kursk, the 2nd place team in the Russian League(Arike, Mavunga, Bentley) fired its coach last week. Strange that a 2nd place team would do this. It could be a reason that Zahui B left the team. Mavunga barely played since the start of the year, she did play in todays game.

Here is a translated statement from the team.

The club and the coach terminated the cooperation agreement by mutual agreement.

We thank Helen Rafaelovna for her professionalism and wish you success in your future career.

Vasily Karasev has been appointed head coach of Dynamo until the end of the season. The rest of the coaching staff remains unchanged.

Hey! Just letting everyone know that Euroleague just picked back up with games on today, Friday and the final on Sunday! The games are free on the fiba youtube site. Presently, there is a great semi-finals matchup between Gala and Fener (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijtwyKj_ks0&ab_channel=FIBA-TheBasketballChannel) with two more games to close out the day. Enjoy!

There's no final on Sunday. These are the quarters. The semis and final are scheduled for mid-April.

Don't know why they've switched to two-legged ties for these quarter-finals, especially considering both games will be played in the same place. Defeats the whole point of a home-and-away tie. Presumably they're trying to cram them into as short a time-frame as possible, but they could've played Game 3s on Sunday.

Yikes! Indeed, you are right. I totally mis-read the calendar. Embarassed I was thinking it seemed a bit early for the final Laughing I hope folks were able to tune in and enjoy!

EuroCup Final Four starts tomorrow, with the final on Sunday, in case anyone's interested. Live and free on FIBA's YouTube channel. Venezia (Fagbenle, NHoward) vs Szekszard (Bonner, McCall) and Carolo (YTurner, Akhator) vs Valencia (RAllen, Gil, Gulich) are the semis.

EuroLeague final four is next week.

EuroCup Women final tomorrow at (if I've shifted the time zones correctly) 1.30pm US ET is Venezia-Valencia. Might be of particular interest to Liberty fans, given that Natasha Howard is on one side and Bec Allen on the other (also Temi Fagbenle, Yvonne Anderson, Celeste Trahan-Davis, Marie Gulich and 2021 draft prospect Raquel Carrera).

The Eurocup Final was a great back and forth game -- neither team led by more than 5 points! Valencia pulls it out 82-81 on two free throws by Racquel Carrera with 0.1 seconds left. Venezia had executed what looked like a perfect play leading to a lay-up after killing most of the clock. But it turns out 1.2 seconds was enough for Carrera to get free on a lob pass, and she was fouled going up. Not bad for a 19-year-old kid who was filling in for the injured starter Laura Gil. She had 22 points on Friday in the semifinal, and 13 points today in the final -- none bigger than the tying and winning free throws.

And by the way, I took Carrera in the Rebkell Fantasy Draft with the 25th pick. Wink

EuroLeague Final between UMMC Ekaterinburg and Perfumerias Avenida is tomorrow (Sunday) at 7pm local time, which should be noon US ET. UMMC are inevitably the heavy favourites (14.5pts, last I checked), but you never know.

Live and free on FIBAs YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTCi3cqmzkc , or also on their Twitch channel for some reason.

(the third-place playoff is also tomorrow, earlier on, but who cares?)

A very detailed BAT case with a lot of numbers for Sandrine Gruda:

Good luck to her trying to collect money from a university in Northern Cyprus that no longer operates a women's basketball team though.
