Kind of an odd year for this award, given that Fudd's team, St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C., played no official season and was 1-1 in exhibition games.
Fudd's junior year was abbreviated because of recovery from ACL reconstruction at the beginning and then Covid at the end, and her senior year essentially didn't exist because of Covid. She currently has a sprained left foot in a boot, which prevented her from playing in the AA game yesterday.
None of this seems to have stopped the media momentum she built up as a freshman and sophomore, nor does it deter certain fans from declaring that she will be better than Paige Bueckers at UConn. |

this is a perfect example of how 'rigged' these awards are in how high media attention skews perception

St. John's actually played two games -- they were not "exhibition" games. One was against Paul VI, which just lost to Westlake in the GEICO High School Nationals' finals.
I think the "real" POY has to be Raven Johnson of Westlake, which played 22 games and won the GEICO, and will be the No. 1 team in the nation.
Johnson was second-rated in the country behind Fudd, and will go to South Carolina.
The only reason Wooten and other awards mention girls is because they have to. They don't put any time into it, and could really care less about whether their teams make sense. (ESPN does a pretty good job, and since I do MaxPreps, I feel we work hard to try to get it right ...)
Fudd's really good, but she shouldn't have been POY.

I mean, the more reputable award, the Naismith, was given to Raven Johnson-who deserved it. How did the Wooten award people even think giving a player who played 2 games the POY award?

Because Morgan Wooten knew nothing about the women's game, and when he was running the McDonald's teams, there was zero interest in how the teams were picked. One girl made the team one year despite not playing all season -- no one bothered to check to see if she was healthy.
