Joanne seemed quite perky and balanced in that interview. As a Bible student, I found it interesting that she got her first two tattoos at age 53, a Biblical verse on each wrist.
John 14:27 -- which says, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." (NIV)
Esther 4:14 -- which says, "For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (NIV)
Little known, at least to me, was that Duke was the first school to send Joanne a recruiting letter, when she was in ninth grade, and was the first that she visited, in 1982. When she was hired as coach, "Duke athletic director Joe Alleva threw his latest dart at Goestenkors while introducing McCallie, saying, 'She's going to lead this program to new heights.'"
McCallie's husband, John, an economics professor, has had his own behavioral problems. He was arrested in 2007 for fighting and biting the fingers of a police officer at the Sarasota airport.
We all have struggles in our lives, most of them unknown to the outside world. I hope JPM has found some peace. |

Bi-Polar illness notwithstanding, I can't help but wonder about the outstanding young women JPM would "throw under the Bus" following a loss. It was brutal. Particularly after losses to UCONN, where there's no shame or fault in losing and plenty of cover to be magnanimous. Duke compromised its WB Program with the JPM hire as it neither replicated nor returned to the prominence it held previously.

Gracias Roberto! Just one little quibble - the program steadily declined under the erratic "leadership" of JPM. But Duke knocked it out of the park with the Kara Lawson hire. Recruits and transfers have started putting Duke on their lists again. Kara knows how to reel them in AND what to do with the players she's got. Duke will soon return to top 5 recruiting classes and regular appearances in the Final Four. And maybe, finally get the #1 accomplishment that eluded Duke under Coach G - the 'ship.
And I must add that the team is WATCHABLE again. Phew! It was embarrassing to cheer for a team that was so predictable and so easy to gameplan against.

I also have great optimism about the Lawson hire for the Duke Program. Recruiting is not difficult. You have a beautiful Campus, Facilities and an Outstanding Academic Reputation. Easy to close the deal with the right Coach and Kara seems to posses all of the characteristics to get the job done and be successful. |
